THE CONVENTION CITY.
Auckland, the ‘Vorinth of the South,” is to entertain Convention next March We hope to see u good muster of delegates from all over the Dominion. Kipling writes of Auckland as “Utst loveliest, exquisite, apart,” and a young White Kibboner has contributed the fol lowing: BEAUTIFUL AUCKLAND. The golden sun. shining down from the vividly blue sky, and reflecting Its glory in the sparkling waters of the Waitemata. makes one think that Auckland Is well named "Queen of the South.” Looking down on the city from the summit of one of the surrounding hills, one is surprised at her beauty. Houses are partly hidden by green trees and surrounded by hedges. Where there are stone walls, the mossy grey stones peep through masses of climbing roses
Here and there a Klinip.se of a blue lake, like a fragment of sky fallen from al)Ove, may be seen. Descending the hill, we look at the shops. I-arse, many storeyed buildings. with well-arranged show-cases, meet the eye. We board a passing ’bus, and after passing through several streets, lim'd with shops, we come to the suburbs, and see houses, large and small. some nestling among trees, and somo set among lavns and brightly flowering shrubs. In their green lawn settings, flower l*eds gleam gaily. As we watch these scenes of beauty passing before us, many miles are covered. until we ride along roads skirted by
(Chinamen's gardens, all the vegetables growing in straight rows, as though they had been raked out with large combs. Then we wander along a winding road, bordered by native bush, with greens of every shade in It. We return from our journey feeling glad that we have taken a little time to enjoy ourselves in the city we now know justifies its title, “(Jueen of the South.” <>ueen of the South, so chaste and fair, A happy home; with thy fragrant air And salt sea breezes. Oh so cool! How happy we, who on thy shores Spend many hours of golden days. MARYAN JOYCE BENFEI L.
