MENTAL DEFICIENCY.

A moat instructive address on thia subject was given to the Auckland Union by Dr. Mildred Staley. Her lecture was illustrated by a chart which classified the feebleminded into H classes. She quoted prominent Professors who had proved by experiments on the lower animals that alcoholism was at the root of a large percentage of mental deficiency and epilepsy. She pointed out the menace the feebleminded were to the community; she suggested that a survey be taken of the Schools to pick out the feebleminded children to classify them and aeggregate them on self supporting farm colonies where they can work with their hands in the open air. These colonies have proved very successful in the Homeland. She stressed the need of women on School Hoards, Hospital Hoards, in Parliament, Women Police and Magistrates and women Censors of cinemas. In connection with the urgency for educating the young on the evils of alcohol, she paid a warm tribute to the women of America. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Staley for her illuminating add ress. —N. DEWAR.
