Dear Madam, —1 am desired by Com missioner Eadie to acknowledge the safe receipt of your letter of the 13th October, and to ask you to express to the Canterbury Branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union the thanks of lumself and, through him, ol the Army in Japan, for their kindly and sympathetic thought ol us in connection with the recent disaster here. Truly our experiences have been heart-rending, especially when we remember the two brave officers we have lost the services of, but through it al! the grace of God has been more than sufficient, and one of the most comforting features has been the overwhelming sympathy which has been expressed with the sufferers by comrades an i friends throughout the world. The Commissioner is very glad that Staff-Captain Smyth was able to render such good service for your Society. — Yours sincerely, HERBERT, A. CLIMPSON, Staff-Captain, Private Secretary
