WOMEN LAWYERS IN THE ARGENTINE.

Slowly but surely the right of women to take their place in the professions is being recognised by the authorities of the Argentine Republic, a count r> where, until recently, the movement in favour of improving women's legal position was still in its nascent luges, chiefly, it is to be feared, bei iu.se of the lethargic attitude of the t.ulk of the women themselves, anil a • ertain deficiency of any but a supeifl < i.il education. The time for the \rgentine woman to take her place l.eside the man in public life cannot now be far distant, and she is to a reat extent naturally endowed with 4iualities which cannot do otherwise than aid her, showing generally a mark«d aptitude for study, a quickness of intellect, ready speech, and a natural ( lutrm of manner, and needing only to be roused sufficiently to make the effort necessary to strike out ft new line. Argentine women on the whole are now being encouraged to graduate in the schools, all of which are under State supervision, and the number of i-ertittanted school teachers increases ;• initially. The professions now open to women in the Argentine are medicin. and law in all their branches, science, art, civil engineering, and chartered .(•eountancy; but so far only a very mail number of women have taken a« \ intage of these openings. The opening up of the legal profe.on to Argentine women was only full) accomplished in July of last year, and was mainly due to the enterprise of \lisy Angela famperohioll, who. after < htaining her degree of Notary in th* l niversity of Buenos Ayres, presented Nmelf at the Civil Court to be sworn
