TEMPERANCE ESSAY COMPETITION.
NEW BRIGHTON SCHOOL
(National Prohibition. ist Prize. Standard V.) Why is it that so many homes arc poor and miserable looking? The answer to this question is the one word “Beer.” Over indulgence in liquor is the cause or the misery brought on many—normally happy homes. Again why it is that asylums have s»> many inmates ? The often-repeated answer, over indulgence in whisky, brandy, beer, and all intoxicating liquors. Breweries have fewer employees, considering their capital than any other kind of firm in the world. If the publican did a fair and honest trade he would not earn enough money “to make end" meet." I herefore the I üblican urges men to drink more than they would do i? he were not there to encourage them. Moreover, if continuance was carried, it should be on the condition that an inspection of liquor in all hotels should he made once a year by a Government officer. If prohibition were carried it would stop the importation, manufacture, and sale of rlcoholic liquors except for the purpose of use in the science of medicines. This would make New Zealand a richer and hotter country. Do you not think it a good position for the country to be in 5 "The position of National Prohibition." If so. vote Prohibition at the nex' election.
