HAWKE'S BAY DISTRICT CONVENTION.

The Hawke’s Bay District Convention was held at Waipukurau on Th ersday, M:y 28th. Delegates repr- eiring the Napier, Hastings, Waipawa, Norscwood, and Waipukurau l 1 mb we:e present. Mrs J. 11. Oldham, District President, was able to preside, h r health having greatly improved this v..at r. Mrs R. A. Hopkirk, President of the Waipukurau Union, in cordial terms, welcomed the visiting delegates. No License campaign was discussed .uni various suggestions were offered. The need for praye r was emphasised, and the workers wme urged to “talk victory.” Mrs Bibby, President of the Waipawa* l nion, suggested that the W.C.T.U. members should organise a campaign to work the remote country districis, as the time of Election draws near. Noon-tide prayer followed. At the Afternoon Session, animated discus-doiis took place on the following resolutions: “That this Convention views with alarm the tendency to take the State Schools out of public control, and c ails the Minister of Education to confirm or restore to school committees their right to select teachers, and also make those committees represent more fully the wishes of the parents.’ Carried unanimously. Mrs Bibby moved, seconded b} Miss Johnson, “That this Convention calls on the Minister for Education to enact more stringe nt regulations to limit the infliction of eorpoial punishment m Suite S- hods.' The election of District Officers resulted .is follows: District President, Mrs James Bibb>. Waipawa; District Secretary, Miss Johnson, Waipawa; District Treasurer, Mrs R. A. Hopkirk, Waipukurau. The Convention then adjourned lor the public meeting in the evening. in the* evening the public meeting was well attended, and the* Rev N. (). White presided. Addresses were given by Mrs Oldham, the* Rev T. Tait, and the chairman. Mrs Oldham’s address, whic h was on the- fc* mation and world-wide? work of the W.C.T.U., was received with marked interest. A programme of musical items was much appreciated. Light refreshments were handed round.
