The White Ribbon. For God and Home and Humanity. WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1910. KING EDWARD VII. “Edward the Peacemaker.”
Born November 9th, 1841 ; Crowned August 9th, 1901 ; Died May 6th, 1910. “ The Chief has fallen ! so the trooj> To-day rides slowly ; Sad heads hend low—hroad shoulders droop Where Death lies holy ; And there are tears in weary eyes, As rain from winter’s weeping skies, Where every sobbing south wind sighs A requiem lowly.’’ MORE than nine years ago the British nation was mourning the loss of its beloved Queen —Victoria the Good. To-day, all hearts are sad because of the lamentable blow that has fallen so suddenly the King’s death knitting the whole civilised world together in bonds of sympathy and grief. We think of the words spoken by him on ascending the throne : “So long as 1 have “breath in my body I will strive to “promote the best interests of my “ peopleand of the faithfulness with which this promise has been kept. It is a matter for thanksgiving how earnestly he strove, and how wonderfully he succeeded, in preserving the peace of the nations of the world. Our hearts are w r ith the stricken one —the widowed Queen — and we pray that the God of all consolation will be her Comfort and stay.
