TARANAKI DISTRICT CONVENTION.
A large number of guests assembled to greet Mrs Stevenson at the reception wo tendered her. The Mayor presided, and gave a hearty welcome to the visitor. Rev. (iuy gave the greeting from kindred societies, and Mrs Allan Douglas for the Union. Mrs Rrush presented a bouquet. Mrs Stevenson replied with a line address. At 10 u.m., Thursday, Convention | opened in Whiteley Hull with a splendid muster. The succoss of the gathering was largely due to the members from the I Auxiliary Unions. A report of each Union's work was read by the delegate. ; A specially interesting paper was read by Mrs Jamison, of Turiki, on the Cradle R 11 and the successful methods of Mrs Thorkloston who is the Turiki superintendent of that work. An exctdlent paper on I’urity, which was prepared and read by Mrs Kmunuel Bayly was favourably noticed by our local press. As a result of this paper the following resolution was passed:—“That this District Convention would like to recommend the New Zealand W.C.T.U. Convention to discuss the work of the Mormons and consequent ovils amongst Kuropoans and Maoris to see if some steps can be taken to put a stop to it.” Mrs Stevenson was taken to inspect the new “ Rost Room,” in the Carnegie Library. At the afternoon session a paper on Scientific Temperance Instruction was given by Miss Maunder, of Hawera, who afterwards kindly answered many questions as to the best methods for bringing this subject into Hands of Hope and Sunday Schools. Mrs Hrash’s paper on “The l’ower of Women ” was thoughtful and convincing. At 3 p.rn. Mrs Stevenson gave an address which was most helpful to White Kibbouers. After answering many questions from the Question Box, she put the members of Convention through a short drill on Parliamentary usage; this was pronounced to be, even by the gentlemen present, most instructive. Other resolutions passed were:—“That a District Convention be held next year in Taranaki about the hist week in August”; also one in reference to the issuiug of licenses in the King Country.
At night Mrs Stevenson gave a final address to a good audience. We are still reaping benefit from her visit by new members joining our ranks.
