Annual Convention. The Seventeenth Annual Convention of the Womens Temperance Union, Cape Colony, was held in the city of (iiahainstown. About 50 Delegates assembled from all parts of the Colony, besides a vi-iting Delegate from the Transvaal. I he business sessions commenced on Monday morning, September 2S, and were held in the Council Chamber of the town Hall, kindly lent by the Mayor for the purpose After the Convention had been deciaied open by Mrs. Mackenzie, the devotional exercires were conducted by Mrs. Fehr, the Evangelistic Superintendent. the Crusade Psalm, 14b, was read, and the Crusade n> mn, “Hive to the Winds thy Fears, ’ was sung. Refore proceeding to business, Mrs Mackenzie introduced and welcomed Mrs. James Cray, a visiting Delegate from the Transvaal, win* brought “greetings from 400 W hite Kibboners in the Transvaal, as well as from many Cood Good templars and True templars The Corresponding Secretary’s report was very encouraging, showing that three new Unions had been orginised during the year—At Port Elizabeth, Cradock, and King William’s Town. The work of the 24 Unions in the Colony had extended in various directions, especially in the Department of Legislation and Petition, and the influencing of Parliamentary candidates. (hi Monday .'veiling the Delegates and their friends wer** publicly welcomed in the Town Hall by tbe Mayor and Mayoress Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Webber . The Hall, which was tastefully and effect i.ely decorated, was divided into six drawing-rooms. Warm words of welcome to the city of Grahamstown were given by the Mayor, Mrs. Helm the President of the Union , Judge Kotzc. Canon \\ oodroft'e, Canon Norton, Mr. H. Fitchat, M.L A., and the Rev. J. Metcalf. Mrs Mackenzie Colonial President) and Miss Solomon replied to these wel comes on behalf of the Delegates. Several musical items were interspersed between the speeches, and refreshments were provided. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by singing the National Anthem.
