NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The Annual Convention.—The Annual Convention of the N.Z. W.C.T.C. is to he held this year in Auckland. March 11th to 18th inclusive. A large attendance at Convention is always desirable, inasmuch as it means increased enthusiasm in tin* year’s work throughout the Dominion. This year, however, is that of the General Election and the Licensing Poll, and unions and workers will need all possible aid in order that woman’s influence may he wisely, as well as strongly, brought to bear upon the many questions that will presently occupy public attention, and largely affect New Zealand’s future weal or woe.

Nominations for N.Z. W.C.T.U. Officers. —Christchurch Fnion nominates Mrs. A. R. Atkinson as recording secretary. The nominations sent by the Greymouth Fnion arc : President. Mrs. Cole; corresponding secretary, Miss Moody Bell; recording secretary, Miss A. Webb.

Reports Wanted.—Mrs. Webb, N.Z. Superintendent of Purity department, asks the bilious to for*

Great Britain and the Opium Trade wiV: China.—We have been asked to draw special attention to the letter which appears on another page dealing with the opium trade. Mrs. Cole, New Zealand President, requests that each Union in the Dominion will discuss the subject before Convention meets, so that the N.Z. officers and delegates may be able to deride what it is practicable to do in the matter.

* Mrs. Harrison Lee.—The many New Zealand friends of Mrs. Harrison Lee will deeply sympathise with her in tin* loss of her husband, who passed away last month. Mrs. Lee was, fortunately, in Melbourne when Mr. Lee was taken ill. * The Chief Justice of Victoria jn the Totalisator. —During his recent visit to Christchurch, Sir John Madden was interviewed with regard to the gambling evil in Victoria, and in the course of conversation remarked: “The chief objection to the totalisator is its tendency to make betting look respectable. Ladies and young people of all grades will bet with the machine when they will not bet with the bookmaker. ’

A Hospital Doctor. —Dr. Eleanor Southey Baker commenced duty on Ist instant as locum tenens for the medical superintendent of the Northern Wairoa Hospital. Dr. Baker is believed to be the first lady doctor in the Dominion to occupy such a position.
