NEWS OF THE UNIONS.

Dunedin. The annual meeting was held on Nov. bth. The Annual Report and balance Sheet was read and adopted. (We have to thank Miss Moody Hell for her kindly help in preparing the Report.) The election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Mrs W. K. Don; Vicepresidents, Mesdames Chisholm, broad, and Kirkland; Secretory, Miss Amy Pearson; Treasurer, Miss Neil. Superintendents of Depart menu -Home Me«t ; ngs, Mrs Chisholm; Evangelistic, Mrs Kirkland; Sailor* Rest, Mrs Pearson ; Hand of Hope and Cradle Roll, Mrs <«ain; Parliamentary, Mrs Nicholl; Literature and White Ribbon Agent, Mrs H eat ley; Press, Miss McCarthy. Mrs Don spoke in high terms of the address delivered by Dr. Emily Siedeberg in the Garrison Hall at which she (the President) had l*»en requested to take the chair. The lecture entitled “ The Duty of Self-Control, ’ contained much valuable advice tv mothers and girls, and was illustrated by various charts. Miss Neil, on the occasion of her approaching marriage, was presented with a piece of plate, our President,
in a few kindly words, w ishing her “ GodSpeed *' in the name of the Union. A special “ Union ” writing paper block has lieen prepared, which, we hope, may come very generally into use Specimens were freely bought by members, and we trust that the sale will materially assist the Union funds.
Feildmg Our usual monthly meeting was well at tended, and Miss Minchin gave a most inte resting address Mrs Hudd read a paper on educational matters received from Miss Powell Mrs Snow was appointed to influence the Pro*,'*. Mrs Frost invited the members to her house to a farewell social to Mrs P. W. Jones, our President, who is leaving the district. Mrs Rudd was appointed President for the remainder of the term. The members of the Union are sincerely grieved to part with Mrs P W. Jones, as she is much loved for her work’s sake. Mr Bligh’s mission to the town was well received, the meetings for women in the Drill Hall were very large, and will, without doubt, be productive of much good. The November meeting w r as fairly well attended. Mrs J. (’. Thompson, who has been away for some months, was present and received a very hearty welcome from those present. It was decided to send £2 towards the expenses of our bay at the Exhibition. Mesdames Frost and Snow were elected a visiting committee to call upon those members who hare not attended lately. It was also decided to hold a social at the next monthly meeting. Creymouth. Our Union has Wen verv busy lately, having taken up the work of getting a home for the sailors w ho come to this port. A conversazione was held, when an attractive programme was given, and much appreciated. The result of same, with donations, amounted to A!2b I ts, which we have placed in the bank. Mesdames Gaskin, Hausen, Parkinson, Mason and Galbraith have been appointed collectors for Greymouth and Cobden for donations to carry on the work. Levin Our last meeting was held at the residence of Mrs Ostler. Before the ordinary business was begun Mrs Ostler read an eulogium on the late Miss Dalrymple, an enthusiastic worker in the cause of the higher education of women and a former president of the Union. The Secretary reported that a letter of sympathy had been sent to Miss Dalrymple’s sister, Mrs> P. Stewart. Correspondence was read from Messrs Field, M.H.R., and W C. Smith. M.L.0., respecting the Anti-Totalisator petition* and expressing sympathy with the movement. Mrs Ostler then read an interesting paper on the Woman Suffragists of England and their recent conduct as reported in the newspapers. The writer showed that their actions were justifiable had they lieen all that was reported at first, and that, " Hut for the dear souls who sixty years ago fought tor women’s franchise and were called 4 shrieking sisters,’ we might hav Seen in a similar position to day.” Mrs Ostler suggested that a largely-signed letter of sympathy be forwarded to our English sisters regretting their unjust treatment by members of Parliament, who had forgotten chivalry and British fair play,
Nelson. At the monthly meeting of our Union on October !»th it was decided to start a Cradle Roll, M iss Ramni to have charge w’lth an assistant. Four new members were received by tin* President, who, in a few words, welcomed them t<> our Union, and fastened the badge on them. Miss Powell’s paper on “ What I Saw in Ashburton ” was read and proved most interesting. Mrs Crump, Mrs Watson and Mis* Atkinson were appointed delegates to a committee recently formed to consider the scheme of the Alliance Fighting Fund. The Executive is devising a plan to raise funds towards the cost of the W.C.T.U. Hay at the Exhibition. New PlymouthAt our meeting held on Oct. 17th, the Treasurer read the very gratifying balancesheet of the Sale of Work. It was decided to send five pounds towards the Hay at the Exhibition. Two new members were admitted into the Union, and the President read a paper by Mrs Dohrmann on the childhood of Frances Willard. On Oct. Blst another new inemler was admitted into the Union A committee of three ladies was elected to investigate a case for relief. A sewing meeting was also convened for the 17th of Nov. The President read an article “Is Alcohol a Stimulant ? ” which will l>e discussed at another meeting.
