New Zealand's Drink Bill for 1904.
The Colony's Drink Bill for the past year has been calculated by the Rev. Edward Walker. It amounts to or £1 los iojd per head of the population, or, upon an everage of five to a family, £\~] 14s 3±d per family. This is a slight increase (2Jd per head) on the expenditure for 1903. The actual amount of the total expen diture by consumers may, Mr Walker believes, be estimated at a couple of millions mo e; country like New Zealand ! Prosperous times have probably had their influence on the increased expenditure. Certainly no one can now say that young New Zealanders do not drink. Five million pounds expended in that which can only yield crime and sorrow, and bring moral, mental and physical deterioration and degradation upon the race!
