A Letter from Glasgow.
A letter has been received from Mrs Kirkland, in which she says:— “ I had the privilege of being the representative of our W.C.T.U at the Annual Council Meetings of the bcottish Union, which were held in Glasgow in November, and I am commissioned to convey to you fraternal greetings from them. The President is Mrs Blaikie, who is over 80 years of age. The meetings were well attended, and the reports gave evidence of progress in the work. But it is like a drop in a bucket. The drinking in the large
cities is appalling, and the sights to be seen of women with little children in their arms and others at their feet going into the bars is heart-sickening. Temperance reform has reached an acute stage. The hostility of the great organised liquor traffic is aroused, and the attention of the public is a wakened, and there is need for effective measures. Just imagine 76 public houses in a district covering a quarter of a square mile ! Dear sisters in New Ztaland, he up and doing, and prevent our fair land from becoming anything like what 1 have witnessed since visiting the land of my birth. In Ireland I was told that in one place one out of every eleven houses is a licensed one; in another, one out of every fifteen ! “ I send from this far-away land loving greetings and wishes for a good New Year to all White Ribboners. I shall not he home in time for the next Convention, but am sending the banner hack by a friend (Mrs Webber) who is going to Dunedin. I have had a delightful time. “Goodness and mercy” have been with me. I have had more requests to speak than I can overtake. I had a lovely time in Ireland and in the Western Highlands. “ Yours in the bond of the “ White Ribbon,” “ M. H. Kirkland. “Glasgow, Nov. 23, 1903.”
