In such a scattered communi ty it ' is as hard to arouse enthusiasm as it is to make a fire with two or three sticks. However, we did a little— we could have done more, perhaps, if the literature on the subject had arrived m time to be distributed before the festival. We had services m the two principal centres. The Rev; H. W. Williams, M.A., conducted evensong at Waerenga-a-hika, and gave an instructive address. The Vicar officiated at Patutahi. It is to be hoped that one result of the jubilee celebrations will be that people will henceforth know that 1 we are members of a free and independent branch of the Catholic Church and not merely an English mission. The Church of the Province .of New Zealand, now that it has attained its fiftieth birthday, should be able to stand on its own ground, and no longer be so largely dependent on but^ side churches for' supplies of literature, clergy, scholars, or bishops ; a: really live branch of. the Catholic Church should be capable of free and independent* action, whether m improving Its constitution or m making necessary additions to or improvements m its liturgy. The Diocesan Paper— Every churchman m the parish should take the diotesan newspaper. It is country districts such as ours. that need.lt most. 'The' corporate church. . , feeling / hardly SXists hi; ouri'scatt'ered. country tli di,s-
tricts, and yet belief m, the unity of the body, and realisation of. ...i»ur...common membership m the one family are absolutely necessary for, the living, of the Christian life. If we are not interested m the work of sister parishes, of other dioceses of the Catbulic Church throughout the world, and. .of church missions, we are devoid of a great part of the Christian spirit. The news m our diocesan paper of church progress among our brethren, and especially m our own diocese, will give encouragement and hope, sympathy with the needs of others will increase charity, its news from the mission field will strengthen our faith, and its instructive., articles will deepen our knowledge. No true churchman can afford to be without his church paper. The Needs:of the District— Owing to the phenomenal growth of this district during the past three years the present provision for services is sadly inadequate. We want 1 more lay readers, more churches, more Sunday schools, two or three more clergy; more earnest communicants, more money and more of everything. The Vicar is only too painfully aware how neglected the work is, but so far neither the Bishop nor the V>icar.has been able to find anyone willing to come as assiatant curate. Ii ogress— We understand that two gentlemen, whose generosity has already be«n many time® proved, have oP'ered £50 apiece towards the building fund at Te Karaka- The /section is already, paid for and we have good hope that it will not be long before the building is commenced.
