THE SYNOD

There was a very happy and wellattended meeting of Synod lasting feom Thursday, October 9th to Monday, October 13th> For a wonder /there was no contest for the seats on Standing Committee and the' following were returned:-— , Clergy. — Archdeacon Hodgson, Canon Stephenson, the Reverends W. T. Drake, S; R. Gardiner, H. Speight, S.^F. N. Waymouth. .. Laity.— Messrs J. G. Appleton, H. R,;. Clark, G. F. Gardiner, I?. TV Hutana, ,e| G Loteh, R. ,E. H.; Pilsoli, R, P. Wilder^ : ' , Mr Speight and Mr. Hutana are new to the, work, There was an interesting debate on the present state oi the Maori Mission and a sub-comniittee was appointed, to consider various matters and to make recommendations. The members are" the Revs. .0. S. 6. ; Gibson, W, T. Puha, H. 'Speight, J. Tamahoki; Messrs. Hutana, Lpten, Paenga, Pilson. ' Three bills were passed, one to make Waipawa a parish, | one to, authorise a loan of £2000 to the Parish of Hastings, and one to remove an anomaly or an irregularity or a grievance m one of ..our own Diocesan Canons. The dread phrase -—ultra vires — was freely used m debating this. :i ' There was an interesting debate "called forth by a motion of Mr. Salt's about baptism and irregularities m "the administration thereof. In the end, the following amendment, proposed by Mr. D. W. Neiid and secY onded by Canon Mortimer- Jones, was carried:— , ■'That this Synod is of opinion that the indiscriminate Baptism of the children of nominal Anglicans is a grave cause of scandal to the Churcli, and would welcome any action taken by General Synod or by individual clergy (within their rights) to re4uire a greater appreciation of the solemhity of Holy Baptism;" ; Affectionate greetings were sent to the Chaplains and other clergy with ■ the— Army.
