MAIL BAG SUNDAY SCHOOL.
'In a discussion of the church mailbag Sunday School, several speakers highly commended the work of Mr., Mrs. and Miss Harper, Mr. F. Williams pointed out that Mr. Harper had by far foe biggest Sunday School m the diocese. ■ The Rev. N. F. Benham urged that greater publicity should be given to the work. It was pointed out that 3000 lessons per month were being sent out at a cost of 3s 2d per hundred. The scheme was now practically self-supporting. Standing Committee now managed the accounts m connection with the scheme. "The Bishop of Aotearoa pointed out that a large number of Maori children were receiving their training under the mail-bag system, and he expressed his thanks to Mr. Harper for his interest m Maori children, which he said was deeply appreciated. The president asked for support for Mr. Har-per's work, and wished that it might be made more widely known. The report was ordered to be printed m the, minutes. The report presented to Synod on the question was as follows: — . "Our Church mail-bag Sunday School family now numbers 1,033 an increase of 459 children m the year. Nine hundred and thirteen country children are receiving lessons regularly from 130 town teachers, whose helpfulness is much appreciated by the parents and the organiser. The thanks of Synod are due to them all for their willing assistance. We have, a cradle roll of 120 young children of under five years. Many Maori children have been enrolled, thanks to the good work of the lady superintendents of the Maori Mission Houses, and others. "Tokomaru Bay now heads our register with 171 pakeha and Maori piro Bay with 137; Te Karaka, 89; Takapau 61; Puketapu 53. Mr. Bridge of Havelock North, has again kindly acted as honorary treasurer, and the
response i from the parents has been, most encouraging. "Finance: The expenditure for the year totalled £'50 10s. 2d, and receipts totalled £44 9s ' 6d, leaving a debit balance for the year of £6 0s Bd. ■ On the motion of Mr. A. B. Harper,, it \\tes decided to set up a select committee, consisting of Archdeacon K. E. Maclean, Canon A. F. Hall, the Rev. R. Hodgson, Mr. H. J. Hull and the mover to consider a report to this session of Synod on. the appointment of a Bible-class : and Sunday School, organiser for the diocese. ' ~ •' . ■'■■■"-
