HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

Th© fulness of Easter joy is only for 'him who has known the discipline of the Lenten fast, and one cannot but feel m these days of careless pleasureseeking what a heart-breaking proportion of our professedly Church people know the one or the other. Can the person whose beautiful /summer garden is solely the outcome of the work of other hands, ever experience the joyous thrill of him who has, with his own hands, dug and delved, planted and protected, during the bleak hours of early spring? So the person who, entirely disregardful of the appeal of Holy Week, comes to worship m the beauty of the flower-decked sanctuary oji Easter morning, stands only on the fringe of the joy and the glad exultation of the Easter triumph. If we compare the normal attendance at pur Lenten and Holy Week services with those of Easter Day, it is obvious that things are not as they should be. :"Could ye not waitch with Me one hour?" — Our Lord still osks of us the pitiful question first voiced m the Garden of Gethsemane so many years ago. What is our answer to be this Holy Week? Are we always to be ready to share m His joys and not m His sorrows? If so, justly enough, the true joy of festival can never be ours.
