BOARD OF MISSIONS

A Credit Balance Altihough nearly £5000 was needed three days before the end of June to enable the co-ordinated missions to bo paid m full, the response from the various Dioceses during the next few days was so magnificent that when the books were closed there was a balance of £599. The many friends who sent donations, m addition to the way the great majority of the parishes responded, shows that the Board of Missions has a warm place m the affections of New Zealand ichurchpeople. Diocesan Totals All the Diocese made a determined effort to reach their quotas, although only three succeeded. Nelson exceeded ito by £200, Wellington by £100, and Dunedin by £23. Wellington has now more than subscribed its quota ;.x years m succession, and Nelson has done so three years running. Synods During July, the General Secretary (Rev. F. B. Redgrave) has addressed the Wellington and Nelson Synods, and the Organising Secretary (Rev. !<'. C. Long) the Waikato Synod. Now that the Board has two secretaries it is hoped that each Synod may be visited each year.

Melanesian Finance The English Committee that has given such splendid financial assistance to the Melanesian Mission has notified the New Zealand Church that it intends limiting its annual (Contribution to the General Fund of the Mission to £9000, as any surplus will be used for work m the Mandated Territory m which Bishop Wilton, the newly-consecrated Assistant Bishop, is now at work. As the Australian Board of Missions is also concentrating on the same area the Mission hopes to receive from the New Zealand Church n, larger annual amount than the £8000 which is now promised. Good News From China A cable has. heen received from Dr. Gordon Thompson ,the superintendent of the Hangehow Hospital, that the various buildings which some 18 months ago were seized by the Nationalist troops have now been handed back to the C.M.S. Two of the New Zealanders who were on the staff, Dr. Phyllis Haddow and Nurse Bargrove, are to return almost immediately, but, unfortunately, Nurse ißrunt's health will not permit her to go back. Bishop Norris, who is m charge of the S.P.G. Diocese of North China, has sent a cable "All well." which evidently has reference to the seven New Zealanders who are working m the vicinity ol Pekin. Polynesia Mr. C. H. Sterling, of Stoke, near Nelson, has been accepted hy the Bishop of Polynesia as the Technical instructor for the Indian Boys' School m Labasa, m Fiji, under the Rev. n. A. Favell. Local Chinese Mission This Mission, which has its headquarters m Wellington, has sustained a jgreat loss m the death of the Rev. C N. R. Mackenzie, ii& Superintendent. Mr. Mackenzie's health had been completely undermined by 26 years' strenuous work m Southern China with, the result that he succumbed to ia slight operation.

On the day previous a quiet day for the ordinand and clergy who were able to attend was conducted at Havelock North hy the Rev. Canon Maclean, who gave very helpful addresses. Mr Speight, who served for over thirty years as a teacher under the H.B. Education Board, has taken up his work as assitant curate m Hastings.
