OTHER DIOCESES

The Reverend William Hey Sharp, Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, and until recently warden of the 'Australian College of iTheologiy, has just passed away alt Sydney, aged 81. In memomry of the late Bishop, Dr. Crossley, sometime Bishop of Auckland, a statuette of S. Columba has been placed by Mi's Crossley m Westminster Cathedral. Dr. Crossley did a great work for the C.E ! .M.S after his return to Ejngland. In the endeavour to avert a street accident he was knocked down and killed m the streets of London. m•m • — ' Last month Dean Fitchett entered upon his fiftieth year as incumbent of All Saints', Dunedin. AJthoug- the Dean has resigned he is holding on till the arrival of his successor, who is not expected to reach the Dominion before August. • • • ■ The Diocese of Auckland has increased the stipends of the Maori clergy to £150 per annum as from April Ist, 1927, • • • • w Last Advent, S. Thomas Parish, Auckland, carried through a Bethlehem play m a most helpful manner. The play was throughout performed m that spirit of intense devotion which is so necessary over so serious and holy a subject. It will be a life memory to those who took pant m it, and to the many children who witnessed it. It is to ibe hoped that this example may be followed by other parishes, but m no less a spirit of devotion. From the monthly letter of the Bishop of Ohristchurch :— No one who was present at the Lambeth Conference of 1920, or who has studied its reports, can help realising that our leaders are anxious and disquieted themselves at 'the fragmentary impact which Christianity is making on the world, and feel that God is calling us to something grander, more generous, and more Christ-like. The criticisms passed on the Church are to us often as painful as criticisms passed on our mother, but there is no use shutting our eyes to the fact that many of them are not captious or hostile at all, but are the divine discontent of those who, with the New Testament open beiore them, long- for the "greater works" which our Lord promised, and are sewing visions and dreaming dreams of His greater glory.

In the Diocese of Waikato three ladies have started work m the Maori Mission: Miss Hurst Sniyth at Paeroa, Mrs Skelton ait Waitara, and Miss Funnell at Okato . On January 10th, the Bishop of Waikato- was married to Miss E. D. T. Price, m the Episcopal Chapel at Bishopscourt, by the Dean of Hamilton. « • • • •» The Rev. H. Lindsay, lately Vicar of Inglewood, has accepted a position at Wanganui College. The new Diocesan School for girls opened at Hamilton on February 14th. • • • • V The list of books required by the Parish Statuo now m force m the Waikato Diocese includes "An Inventory of all property under the control of the Churchwardens and Vestry." This should include a complete list of all furniture m the Church ; and each item should state material, source, date of insertion, if a memorial, the name of the person memorialised, and a cop^ of any inscription. The origin of stained glass windows is particularly important and it is considered that the value of such a record can hardly be overestimated. • ••••. The Dioces© of Wellington has sustained a severe lose, m the death of the Rev. W. S. Treinain, who, on Jan. 16th, m driving his car into Palmerston North, collided with the express at Longburn. Tho first five years of his ministry Mr Tremain spent m the extreme north of the McKenzie River Diocese, working among the Esquimos. In 1920 he wa» appointed Vicar of Raetihi, whence, m 1923, he was removed to Rongotea. May he rest m peace. • ••»«■ Tho Rev. G. W. Dent, after four an<l a-half years as senior curate at Palmerston North, has left for England on a year's holiday. He has been {succeeded by the Rev. J. Neild, who was ordained m Wellington on St. Andew's Day. Mr Nield is a son of the Rev. A. Neild, Chaplain to the 'J'e Ante College, ami examining chaplain to the Bishop of Waikato.
