Wairoa

Vicar: Rev. Canon Butterfield, B.D. The parish has lost two of its lady workers during the past month, Loth of whom have been promoted to labour m. the higher spheres of Paradise. Mrs. Pemberton, daughter of Mr. Poyzer,

has long- been a helper m. church work; Mrs. Byford was suddenly called away, leaving a family of young children, the oldest, Joan, being only fourteen years *of age. The heartiest sympathy of" parishioners, goes forth to their sorrowing relatives and children. May the Almighty Father grant to all mourners the consolation of His Holy Spirit and to all the departed light, refreshment and peace. Sunday schools have resumed. There is a sad lack of teachers £snd many children who should be at Sunday ' school have not yet appeared this year. We hope the attendance will 1 greatly improve. A fete was ,held m the Vicarage grounds on Wednesday, February 15. After a long spell of hot dry weather, it was disappointing that we should have heavy ram on Fete day. The morning was fine, the afternoon very threatening, and m the evening rain fell heavily. The ladies had been most successful m obtaining goods for then* stalls; generous donations cam© from all round the parish 3 the Vicarage grounds were m ideal' condition and all workers and there were lots ol them — had done their best, but the weather kept Buyers away. In spite or all, however, nearly £100 was raised andl goods were left over sufficient to stock a good "shop" later on. Unfortunately, perishable things had to ne got rid of at ridiculous prices. The spaco available m the gazette would not suffice if I were to mention all 1 those who helped, and who. m spite of adverso conditions, kept smiling faces to tho end. The grounds were splendidly illuminated m the evening, the work being done by Mr. Woods, electrician. Of course the ice cream and soft drinks stall felt the weather severely, the greater part of the abundant provision for afternoon tea was left over. the band concert was cut short, there was no dancing on the lawn, and the splendid little concert organised by MrPerry, was thinly attended. One stall only, the sweets stall, sold out its goods. The produce stall did splendidly, and the "white elephant" stall well, though a great deal Avas left over. Fraserltown friends supplied a stall and did better than one would expect under the circumstances. Other stalls were the cake stall, fancy stall', apron stall, and the children's stall. The Fete was a straight-out sale of generous gifts and the willing service of workers was altogether commendable. To all who gave and worked so well the vestry are grateful. Service List.
