The Provincial Church.

AUCKLAND. ■■': The Archbishop recently dedicated the Church of the Ascension at Point Chevalier, and the Rev. W. E. Gillam has been instituted there as vicar. The Rev. A. V. Venables is to succeed the Rev. S. W. I. Salt as vicar of Mangere. A Bill to divide the Parish of S. Mark, Remuera, is to be brought before the forthcoming Synod.. : The part which it is proposed to cut off will be known as S. George 's, Epsom. Parochial Fraternity. Quite a good r parish social stunt has been started m Auckland, and we venture to pass it on to others per the "N.Z. Churchman." It certainly has helped to break down parish barriers better than anything we have hitherto tried. The idea was started by S. Mark's, Reinuera, last year. The vicar and four representatives of each vestry m and around Auckland were invited to an evening, the principal item of which was a shodting competition on a miniature rifle range for a miniature cup.. There were quite a number of side competitions, but this was the piece de resistance. The winning parish was under obligation to give a similar evening within the year or return the cup to S. Mark 's, who, m that case, would conduct the competition as at first. A splendid crowd turned out, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Many of us recognized men whom we meet constantly m business, but we had no idea that they were churchmen, let alone vestrymen. Everybody wore a cardboard badge bearing his name and parish, so introductions were not required. The competitions provided considerable amusement and good fellowship, arid we all got to know one another wonderfully well m so short a time. As all had the work of the Church at heart, with that m common it was surprising how quickly real friendships could be made. The cup was won by S. Alban's, and they gave their evening a few weeks ago, and succeeded m retaining the. cup. Theirs was an equally pleasant evening, and m Auckland we feel that this scheme is a thoroughly good one, and we hope it will be tried elsewhere. It is well worth while. WAIAPU. It is understood that the Bishop intends to make a trip to England next year with his family. ■ Miss Makeriy, who has been matron of the Girls'. Friendly Society Lodge for over seven years, has resigned her position owing to her appointment as matron of Flock House for Boys at Balla. The Parish of Waipawa has received from the Rathbone Trustees a sum of £2,093 10s. towards the fund for building a new church. Canons Rice and Packe have been reappointed to" their stalls by the Bishop for a period of five years.

WELLINGTON* Perhaps more than any other N.Z. Diocese Wellington obtains ' clergy from the Old Country. The latest to receive an appointment is the Rev. W. Langston, assistant curate of S. Agnes, Moseley, Diocese of Birmingham, who has been chosen as the Vicar of Mangawbka m succession ' to the Rev. G. Watson, who has gone to Eketahuna. Three memorials were recently; dedicated; m S. Mary 's Home at Karori by the Governor-General. They were an} altar m; the chapel m memory of Mrs. Townsend, a sleeping porch erected by the late Miss Anne Greenwood's friends, and a panelled hall to commemorate the late Mrs. George Shirtcliffe. Mothers ' Union delegates from each of the Dioceses met for conference at Government House under the leadership of Lady Alice Fergusson, the Dominion President. A great deal of important business was transacted. S. Mary 's, Karori, has been celebrating its diamond jubilee. The church is being •enlarged by the west wall being thrownback some 20 feet. The new Samuel Marsden : Collegiate School was officially opened by the. Governor-General. It is a fine building situated on a spacious site m the best part of Karori. It is the third Church School to be erected m the Diocese during the past year. . . .-.'.'. NELSON. : The Rev. Canon Smith is steadily improving from the very severe attack of influenza. The Dean and he both hope to take up their work at the beginning of November. The Rev. G. F. Neligan has been appointed to the parochial district of Amuri and was inducted by the Bishop on Sunday, 26th September. The Yen. Archdeacon Kempthorne who of December, has now resigned as Arch-) resigned as vicar of Brighton at the end deacon of Waimea. He was ordained by! the Archbishop of Canterbury m 1873 at the request of Bishop Suter and during all his ministry has worked m the Diocese of Nelson. His has been a long period of faithful service for the Church and. truly he deserves his well-earned rest. The Bishop has appointed Canon J. R. Dart, Vicar of All Saints', Nelson, to be the new Archdeacon. ■ He is one of the senior clergy having been m orders over 30 years. He was m charge of Brunnerton at the time of the disaster m 1896, going from there to Reef ton, thence to Westport and on to Wakefield. He was a lay member of Synod before his ordination and has the unique position of having been lay and clerical secretary of Synod for 40 years. During the . War he took over the work of the Diocesan Office to allow the Diocesan Secretary to enlist. CHRISTCHUROH. S. George 's Hospital Market added about £1,700 to the fund, and was a well-deserved success for the energetic band of workers who, will see the fruits of their labours on

October 30, when His Excellency the Governor-General lays the foundation stone of the Hospital at 2.30 p.m. The foundation stone of S. Nicholas', Barrington, will be laid on October 17, and before Christmas it is hoped to complete the church which will minister to the spiritual needs of the people m this rapidly growing district. . The new Church, of S. Barnabas, ; Fendiaiton, is Hearing completion, and will be opened m November. The foundation stone of All Saints', Hokitika, is to be laid on November 3. Synod had a somewhat lengthy session this year. A good deal of time was taken up m discussing the Fundamental Clauses of the Constitution, and it was finally agreed that further consideration be post-, poned till next Synod. Another matter' which was not disposed of hurriedly was a proposal to amend the Church Property Trustee Act m the direction of giving greater scope for the administration of the Dean and Chapter and Bishopric Estates. A petition was presented and a deputation of Churchmen received regarding the proposal to sell certain sections of, land which, form part of Bishopscourt site, against which sale petitioners and deputation vigorously protested. The petition was finally referred to Standing Committee and Church Property Trustees for their information and consideration. . The annual meeting of S. Saviour's Orphanages, .held at Church House on October 11, disclosed a financial .condition which must cause anxiety to all who have, this work at heart. Excess of expenditure over income for the year ending August 31, 1926, is £2,952, and, as the Bishop, pointed out, if the work is to be main-, tamed an additional income of something like £2,000 is needed. The. Rev. A. H. Barnett, Vicar of Tinwald, has volunteered for work m theChatham Islands, and he and Mrs. Barnett will go there m the autumn. The Bishop hopes to pay a visit and administer Con -firmatiori m February. DUNEDIN. Rev. H. O. Fenton has resigned the cure of Anderson's Bay, and will leave New Zealand for England m February. An exchange has been arranged, with the Bishop's sanction, between Rev. H. Parata, of Gore, and Rev. H. S. Bishop, of Queenstown. , The Synod sermon was preached by the Dean— at the age of 90. Rev. 1. L. Richards has been appointed to the cure of S. Michael's, Anderson Bay. . . ;. ' ■■ ,v' f "r_ v We understand that an exchange has been arranged between Rev. A. W. 0. Stace, vicar of Kurow and Rev. J. Morland, vicar of Lawrence. Universal sympathy, is being extended to the Bishop on the death of his younger daughter. The loss is the more keenly felt since, two of his sons gave their lives m the Great War.

Board of Missions Notes. Income. The. Budget receipts for the first three' months of the financial year (to Sept. 30)' were only £1,200 or l/15th of the income required for the twelve months. This is an evidence that very few parishes have; any method .of regular and systematic; giving for missions/ : As the different coordinated Missions have, to finance, theirl work regularly it is very inconvenient haying to wait until the end of the financial period for the bulk of the money needed. Surely the! ideal thing is for each parish to aim. at reaching a fourth part" of its quota each quarter. . .'..■ Organising Secretary. :C . Since the beginning of the year the Board has had no Organising Secretary. Valuable deputation work has been' done. by the Eevs. Trevor Gilfillan and F.Ck Long, and Misses M. Woods. and V.:Opie> New Zealand missionaries on furlough. From February next the Rev. F. 0. Long will- act as Organising Secretary for a period of nine months when, if his health is completely restored, he wil return to his Work at Karachi m North-West India. World Call Reports. , A cheaper edition of the four reports^" on India, Far East, Africa, and Moslem Lands — has been obtained from England; and can be had form the Board's Of&ceJ 49 Ballance Street, Wellington, at ■'4/6 (including postage). Literature bearing on the "World. Gall" is being sent to' all the clergy at S. . Andrewstide , as . it'- is hoped that some of the wonderful enthusiasm called forth m the Old Land' may reach the Church of this Province. : : Captain Watson. Captain Watson the orginator of- r tne "Duplex'? Envelope "scheme has rendered a great service to' the Churcn 1 by raising the question of Giving on' to; a' high spiritual plane. Besides speaking at the Auckland, Dunedin and Waiapii Synods he is addressing meetings at" the larger' centres explaining the working of his' scheme. It is hoped that these meetings^ may be attended by representatives' -of" practically every parish m New Zealand.) Wonderful results have been v obtained" wherever "Duplex" has been" given a fair : trial.' " : ' " -:. The Rev. E. Y. P. Lee. The Chinese Missioner, after five years' splendid work amongst the , Chinese m the Wellington, Waiapu arid Christchurch-,, Dioceses, has returned to .Canton. He will be greatly missed not only -by the wholef Chinese community but by. a host of Eutq-^ pean friends who. were much attracted -Jjyy his spiritual gif ts> his modesty and- 'his/ charm, of . manner.
