"GAZETTE" Subscriptions are now Due. Waiapu Church Gazette. THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 1912. Letter from the Bishop.

: , Stafford, England, June 2nd, 1912. My Dear People,— My time seems to have been very tully occupied since I came to England, and my short holiday will soon be at an end. The weather during April and May was phenomenal, and we are now for the first time getting some much-needed rain. I recently paid a visit to Truro, and stayed with my Commissary, the Rev. Canon Hassard, Sub-Dean of Truro. The journey from Paddington through the South of England m the late spring was. delightful, and the Cornish hills were looking very beautiful. It was most interesting to see a finished modern Cathedral, and to find that Cathe-dral-building is not a .- lost art m these latter days. I had previously seen the beginnings of the grand Cathedral at Liverpool, and rejoiced m the finished Lady Chapel. My visit to Truro was primarily to take part m a Missionary Festival, and I gave an address m the Church at Bodmin and spoke at a public meeting afterwards, and on the next day preached m the Cathedral twice at Truro, and also gave an address at, a subsequent meeting. I stayed at Exeter on

'iiiy way back, aiid saw; the' Cathedr4,.;and, the quaint old town, and < then proceeded, via Bristol to Devizes 'and spent the night ., with" ■^Isnop Walhs, lately Bishop . bt 'Wellington, whom if'tpund. able to do a fair amount of work; and very happy m his Wiltshire home aiid Archdeaconry. ; You will have heard of the unexpected death ,of the Rev. Allen Gardiner at Oxford. I was talking to him quite a short time before his death at the annual meeting of the Melanesian Mission m London, and he seemed to be remarkably well ; m fact, I had never seen him look so t well. He was speaking of his intention to , make full use of the summer, months m England, and then return to take up work m New Zealand. I went up to Oxford to bury him, and was very thankful that I had the privilege of doing so. I am sure we shall . all sympathise very deeply with Mrs. Gardiner and family m their sad bereavement. I have recently seen the Rev. B. Robertshawe, of, Dannevirke, who seems to be much better for his holiday, and also the Rev. G.. B. Kear, who acted as Assistant Curate at Dannevirke for some time. The latter is now helping m a parish at Tottenham, and doing good work. I gave an address to a large congregation of men m his Church on the Sunday after Ascension Day. Iyast week I visited Canterbury, and spent the day at S. Augustine's College, where I gave an address to the students, and after the address two of the students volunteered to come and work m the Diocese of Waiapu when they have finished their course of training. To-morrow I go to Stoke-on-Trent, to see Prebendary H. V. Stuart, my other Commissary, who: did such good work for us m Napier during the Mission. I am glad to say that Oxford University have given me my D.D. degree, m spite of the fact that the future of such degrees is at present under :discussion. I hope to take it on June nth, S. Barnabas Day,; when we are invited to stay with the President of S. John's College, Oxford, my old College. I am glad to say that I am very well, and looking forward to returning to the Diocese. Mrs. Averill has suffered much from hay fever, but at the present time is being treated by a London specialist, who hopes to cure her.

Hoping to see you all again soon,; and commending you to; the love and protection of the Father of all;— -Believe me, your , sincere friend and Bishop, : ';.■: ; ' .','•''.' ; J\' : ..\ A. W. WAIAPU.
