New President Mrs Miria Karauria joined the Mount Maunganui branch of the league 11 years ago, and since then has been actively involved in many ways, including office as Area Representative for the Waikato-Maniapoto district for the past two years. She began her community activities after her six children grew up and married, and she went to live at the Mount. She is a Maori Warden and was one of the first woman ambulance drivers for the St. John Ambulance Association in her area. Speaking after her election, Mrs Karauria said that the improvement of the Maori people's education and the facilities for it would always be a major aim of the league. ‘We work at educating our women, hoping that this may be carried through to their families, and consequently improve the living conditions of our people.’ One of the things the league was backing to the utmost was pre-school education for Maori children.
