Mr Te Amo Kapene Mr Te Amo Kapene, who was believed to be aged 106, died last July in Wairoa. He was the son of one of Te Kooti's lieutenants. Mr Kapene spent his life in the Awamate district. He vividly remembers talks with Te Kooti, life in huts constructed of totara and raupo, and conditions in the very early days in Wairoa. He assisted his father, who had a large holding at Aranui, near Awamate, and spent most of his adult life in scrubcutting, bush-felling and other agricultural activities. Mr Kapene's health remained excellent until recent weeks, and it was only during the past few years that he gave up riding his horse about his farm. He had 14 children, several of whom predeceased him, about 44 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. More than 100 people from all over the Wairoa district attended the tangi at the Taihoa marae.
