FM%?

FM radio has made a successful debut in Auckland but exactly how successful it's been is in dispute. Stereo FM recently published newspaper ads proclaiming its launch to be "a world record" the most successful launch of a commercial FM station ever. A survey commissioned by the station showed that it had scooped 10 per cent of the city's total listening audience over 10 years of age and 19.4 per cent of its target audience, 20-34 year-olds. Auckland's other FM station, MJK,

showed 9.5 per cent and 14.9 per cent respectively. But preliminary results of a survey commissioned by the Broadcasting Tribunal give Stereo FM only 6 per cent of the market, behind even MJK with 8 per cent. The survey put Stereo FM third in the 15-29 age group with a 15 per cent share and MJK fourth with 14 per cent. Radio Hauraki and IZM held first and second places with 23 per cent and 21 per cent respectively. The Broadcasting Tribunal's survey was carried out over a four-week period from June 4 to July 1. Stereo FM's covers June 11 to July 22 a later period when the station had had more time to establish itself.
