'.'ln.: recent years the. national record industry awards have been a fairly tawdry affair, hardly generating the excitement befitting an honouring of the country's foremost artists.. This year that's all >■—> .i ■ h 1■ i * www ihi—wnnMßiwtf going to change. The team organising this years awards is hoping they will hark back to the days of the Loxene Golden Disc Awards. The awards t show will be held in the new Wellington Town Hall on November 7 and one and a half hours of it will be broadcast on prime-time TV. [The show will have more in common 'with the Golden Disc Awards than itsTVcoverage. Two categories, "Best Song" and "Best Performer" will jbef decided by public vote. The records of entrants in the two categories will be sent to teams in the four main centres who will pick 10 to be made into a montage to be played regularly on that area's radio stations. Voting forms will appear in weeklies and, of course, Rip It Up. - The awards themselves will feature all 1 sorts of attractions, I] including appearances by acts like i DD Smash and the Body Electric. There will also be a video montage stretching back through 20 years of iKisiifpop^ia - Awards will be presented by such noted local dignitaries as Tim Finn and Robert Muldoon. . Contrary to rumour, Mushroom Records acts like DD Smash and ; the Dance Exponents will be eligible for awards as the Australian company's local branch is in the process of registering as a separate, New Zealand company.
