Indies Get Together
A new body has been formed to represent the interests of New Zealand's independent record companies. Representatives of seven Auckland record companies (Mandrill, Ode, Propeller, Reaction, Hit Singles, Warrior and Unsung) met at Mascot Studios on June 13 and decided to form the Independent Recording Society. Ode's Terence O'Neill Joyce was elected interim chairman and Will Ilolahia and Ross France of Warrior Records will be handling secretarial duties in the meantime. The society's first action was to throw its support behind Marmalade Records' Rocky Douche, who was to address the Broadcasting Tribunal Issues 'B3 conference on the topic of local music quotas on radio.
One of the body's main functions will be to share experience and information on distribution and publishing. Among matters to be looked at in the future are screening rights on TVNZ-made videos and the possibility of an independent distribution network. But O'Neill Joyce emphasised that the society's aim was to work alongside the existing Record Industry Association rather than confront it. Companies not represented at the meeting have been invited to join.
