Police Understanding Sought
The organisers of the Christchurch dance which flared into violence when police attempted to close it down in May have met with police to try and ensure the incident is not repeated. Representatives of the Alternative Entertainment Bureau and the Department of Internal Affairs have talked with police to establish a "working relationship" for the future. Hopefully this will mean an end to the abrupt closure of dances by the men in blue. The scene of the May 27 fiasco.
the Caledonian Hall, is still available to the AEB, which plans to continue its low door charge, no age restriction policy. The Arts Centre has, however, banned the AEB because of "fears of damage." Internal Affairs' support continues with a SISOO grant, which had been earmarked for the purchase of a van but will instead go to recouping the losses of the last dance. One private prosecution against police as a result of the incident is proceeding.
