A Battle for Shingles.

A mass meeting of the shingle manufacturers of Oregon and Washington and British Columbia was held at Seattle to consider ways and means to combat the steady and insistent propaganda antagonistic to the use of red cedar shingles. It was clearly shown that the manufacturers of substitute roofings were using every means at their command, even to the extent of invoking the influence of the National Board of Underwriters to restrict the use of shingles by extending unnecessarily and unfairly the fire limits in which shingles are permitted to be used in cities and towns. The determination of those manufacturers present at the Seattle meeting was to assess themselves three cents per thousand to combat anti-shingle legislation, contingent upon being able to swing at least 50 per cent, of the machine capacity into line. Those who attended the meeting realised that the industry has a great battle on its hands.
