Building Notes.

AUCKLAND. A return showing the building activity in the Mount Albert Borough, for the period from July 24th to August 9th, shows that 15 permits for dwellings had been issued, at a cost of ,£10,705, others bringing the total to 30, representing a cost of 3 3i0. The total number of permits for dwellings only issued from April Ist to August gth were 69, valued at £53,205. A number of building permits have been issued by the New Lynn Town Board representing a total cost of £'4,335In July seventeen building "permits were issued by the One Tree Hill Board of a total of £6,000. At-a recent meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, it was resolved to ask the Minister for Finance tor permission to borrow the sum of ,£12,500 for the erection and furnishing of the municipal buildings authorised by the ratepayers at the recent poll. Messrs. Harvey and Garrett were appointed architects, and waited upon the council to submit preliminary specifications. Building operations in connection with the new St. Helen's Hospital were completed last week, and the building has been handed over to the Public Works Department. The work of installing the lift and heating apparatus is now going forward, and when this has been completed arrangements will be made for a move from the old building. The new hospital was started in March, 1921, and has cost about £30,000. Matters in connection with the Hospital building programme were discussed at the meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board recently. The Building Committee reported that it had approved of the sketch plans prepared by the architect, Mr. G. W. Allsop, for the nurses' home extension. The scheme provides for 146 additional rooms and walls and flooring for 12 more rooms on each of the four floors on the south extension. The cost of this, and other extensions at the Costley Home is approximated at £130,000. A dairy factory in concrete has been erected at Aria, King Country, at a cost of over £3,000, to replace the present wooden building. Mr. J. Anderson, Architect, invited tenders during August for the erection of a residence at Takapuna, in reinforced concrete. Messrs. Arnold & Abbott, Architects, called tenders for the erection of a three-storey addition, in brick, to store in Sale Street. Mr. F. Browne, Architect, invited tenders for a bungalow at Mount Albert, and also for alterations and additions to factory in Stanley Street. Mr. E. Baddeley, Architect, invited tenders for the > - erection of a cottage at Henderson, and also for a bunga- ', low at Grey Lynn. .- Mr. J. Clark, called for tenders this month for a resi- } dence, in wood, at Mount Albert. / Messrs. Mahoney & Son, Architects, invited tenders ) this month for erection of premises for the Bank of New Zealand, at Otorohanga. CHRISTCHURCH. During the month of July 100 building permits were issued in the city, representing a building value of £48,950. For July 1921, the permits were 56, and the value £29,483. Since April Ist of this year 287 permits have been issued with a building value of £141,785. For the corresponding period of last year the permits were 198 and the value £123,893.

England Bros., Architects, invited tenders for the following : —a residence, in brick, Bealey Avenue; a house at St. Albans, and for council chambers, in brick, for the Kowai County Council. Messrs. J. & M. Guthrie, Architects, invited tenders for: a shop, in brick, Selwyn Street, a house in Barbadoes Street, and also for memorial entrance to Lancaster Park, in reinforced concrete. Mr. G. Haines, Architect, called tenders for the erection of a two-storey residence at Riccarton, and also for a two-storey residence at Darfield. Mr. H. St. A. Murray, Architect, invited tenders for a house at Barr Hill, and also for a house at Fendalton. DUNEDIN. The Public Works Board has accepted the tender of the Fletcher Construction Company of £11,942 for the erection, at Dunedin, of the automatic telephone exchange. DARGAVILLE. Messrs. Wade & Bartley, Architects, Auckland, invited tenders this month for the erection of municipal chambers and public library for the Dargaville Borough Counicl. HAMILTON. During the month of July 30 permits for buildings, estimated to cost ,£14,221, were issued by the Hamilton borough engineer. During the past two years no less than 587 houses have been erected in Hamilton, these figures represent the erection of almost one house for every working day in the two years. The figures for the past three years show that buildings to the value of £735,780 had been erected. NEW PLYMOUTH. Building perimts issued at New Plymouth during the month of June were valued at 5,000. REDCLIFFS. A community hall has recently been opened at Redcliffs. The hall, which is the first of its kind in New Zealand, is attached to the school, and in addition to providing the district with a place for social gatherings, it makes two additional class-rooms for the school children. The new building which is 54ft. by 24ft., and is equipped with modern lighting, heating and ventilating systems, was

erected at a cost of ,£1,068, of which amount £4OO was raised by the residents. WELLINGTON. The number of permits by local authorities for the erection of new buildings for the year ended 31st March, was 5,015, of which 4,330 were for dwellings, the value of which in the aggregate was ,£3,141,000, or a little under £7BO per house. The value of permits for alterations and additions was £680,178. Tenders are being invited by the Public Works Tenders Board for the erection of a new main exchange for Wellington, which will cost in the vicinity of £50,000. When these buildings are complete, the Wellington telephone system will be entirely automatic.
