Our 39th Competition
SMALL SUMMER BRICK HOUSE
Only three designs were sent in for this competition, viz.:—“Pohara” by Florence J. Field, with Mr. F. dc J. Clerc, Wellington; “Progressus,” by Richard Osten, with Messrs Anscombe and Smith of Invercargill; “Mare,” by Horace L. Massey, Auckland.
Mr. R. K. Binney of Auckland who kindly set this subject reports as follows—
“Marc” is undoubtedly the most pleasing design and it is a pity more attention had not been paid to the planning which is far too elaborate and cut up for what was asked. The elevations are very good and most suitable for a Summer residence, but it is doubtful if it could be built for the sum specified, £1,500. The general lay out of the garden is very pleasant and the terrace to the garden front overlooking the sea with pool at one end is delightful and well thought out. I award half the first prize to “Mare” for the design of the elevations and the garden plan. There were only three designs sent in for this competition but the other two were too elaborate for what was required.” (Sighed) R. K. BINNEY.
