Style in Architecture
Search for an architectural style that shall hand down monuments of this time of upheaval and unrest is lost labour. The true artist cannot shut his eyes to the art of the past, or the continuity of architectural history. Oh the other hand, he knows well that revival after a time of degradation always began by attempted exploitation of an older art, which
being dead, could not live again, but which, nevertheless, evolved something new, which lasted, or not, as the needs which demanded it were permanent or transitory. The architect whose work of. to-day will not -be scorned in the better time coming is he who sets himself to solve some structural problem with an honest desire and healthy, instinct for beauty, and who has little time and less inclination to dscover a new style, or to supply obolete styles to order at the whim of the client, or the demand of the curious, or the whims of taste of self-con-stituted critics.— “ Building News.”
