are at 45 and 47 Cuba Street, Wellington, dates from the year 1886, when the business was founded in Sydney and Melbourne. In 1909 Mr. H. F. Vickery, A.M.I.E.E. (London), the Manager, came over to establish the local branch, and the Company’s operations now extend throughout the entire Dominion.

The marvellous advance in the application of electrical energy to the varied needs and requirements of modern life has rendered it possible to utilise this unseen but powerful force in a greatly increased variety of ways. Its cleanliness, its regularity, the ease with which it can be brought into requisition and the reasonableness of the cost all combine to constitute electricity a most popular agent for all purposes to which it has already been applied. The future will, doubtless reveal many other methods of adapting the subtle fluid to the use and benefit of the human race. The picture gives a portion. only of the extensive showrooms of the Lawrence and Hanson Electrical Company and a small idea ' only is given of the extent of the stock carried at the New Zealand branch. A large number of electric motors are included in the stock, and these can be supplied from one-tenth h.p,, for driving household, sewing, and , other machinery, to 10 h.p. for factories. There arc Dynamos, also, of varied sizes, from one kilowatt to ten kilowatts capacity, for generating energy available

stock. Electric Radiators, in chaste and artistic designs, worked in hand-beaten, oxidised copper, in form either circular or straight, and fitted with four lamps and two switches, so that cither two or four lamps may be used at once, are displayed. The XCELL dry bateries constitute one of the finest dry cells on the market, and are largely in use in the Post and Telegraph Department. Another special line is

ami cames, m audition to others already named. Although in Australia the Company are large contractors, the business in New Zealand is confined only to the wholesale trade. It is of general interest to note that the Wellington City Corporation has recently let a contract to the Lawrence and Hanson Electrical Company for supplying plant in connection with the extension of the water supply. At Roseneath a 64 brake h.p. motor, direct coupled to a six inch six stage high lift centrifugal pump, capable of delivering 300 gallons per minute against a total head of 878 feet, is being erected. The same power motor is to be used at Melrose, coupled to a six inch five stage pump equal to 350 galls per minute, at a height of 232 feet, and at Wadestown a motor of 150 h.p. will operate with a seven inch seven stage appliance capable of lifting 500 gallons per minute against a total head of 555 feet. High level residents next summer should therefore never suffer a water famine. The above not inconsider-

able list of supply seems an ordinary thing, because the various items are familiar now as household words. Even from that point of view the list is remarkable, for where else will you find so many, or dealing with all work from the colossal department which pumps water supplies for large populations, to the driving of the smallest labour saver. The point is that the list is really an epitome of the electric history of the world.

tender of Messrs. Sollitt Bros., of £5500, has been accepted. Messrs. Penty & Lawrence, of Wellington, are the architects. For the erection of the Carterton Coronation Band Rotunda, the tender of Messrs Mason & Rose, of £l9B, was accepted, but they have refused to take up the contract at the price' accepted by the Borough Council Committee, and have forwarded an amended tender. Accordingly all other tenderers have been asked to submit further tenders, and a sub-committee of the Park Beautifying Committee will meet to consider them.

The result of the open competition for the proposed new Girls’ Training Hostel, in connection with the Technical College in Christchurch, places Mr. B. Bowring, of Christchurch, first, and Mr. Murray Kean, of Wellington, second.

It is suggested a public hall should be built near the railway at Otaki, which, with the residences, shops, a bank and a planing mill now in course of erection, makes this town a busy centre in the building trade. Te Horo has recently had a Roman Catholic Church erected, and we learn plans are being prepared for a Methodist Church in the same place.

For the erection of the Adelphi Picture Theatre in Willis and Boulcott Streets, Messrs. Hoggard & Prouse, architects, the tender of Messrs. Howie & Matthews, of £6733, was accepted.

For the erection of a moving picture theatre for Messrs. Shortt, Ltd., in Willis Street, alterations and setting back of their premises, the tender of Mr. H. E. Manning was accepted. The work is to be completed by Christmas. Mr. Larkham is the architect.

For the erection of "New Zealand Truth’s” new buildings, Messrs. C. T. Natusch & Sous remind us the time has been extended.

Messrs. Crichton and Mackay, architects, of Wellington, are preparing sketch plans for a new store and warehouse for Messrs. Dalgety and Company at Blenheim, to replace the premises destroyed by fire some weeks ago.

For the erection of the new Union Bank and manager’s residence at Palmerston North, the

AUCKLAND. Dor the erection of a block of five brick shops and dwellings in Victoria Road, Devonport, Mr. T. W. May, architect, the tenders received were: L. McKinstry, £3475; Patterson & Brooks, E. Morris, £3680; R. McGullura, £4265; J. J. Holland, £4482; W. Massy, £4576.

For the erection of premises for the Bank of New Zealand at Pukekohe, Messrs. E. Mahoney & Son., architects, alternative tenders received were: W. Massey, £3086 (brick), £2454 (wood); W. H. Pausell, £2685 (brick), £2274 (wood); O. E. Farrow, £2476 (brick). For the erection of four brick shops and dwellings in Ponsonby Road, Mr. W. A. Holman, architect, Mr. L. McKinstry’s was the successful tender.

The following tenders were received by Mr. P. W. Broker, architect, Auckland, for the erection of four houses in Beresford Street, 'Parnell: Jas. Morris, £1840; J. W. Bambury, £1829; C. T. Tenders are to be invited shortly for the erection of a new Post Office at Ponsonby, Auckland. The building will be erected on the site of the present Post Office at Three Lamps. Messrs. Wade & Wade are preparing plans for the erection of a three-storey building at the corner of Chancery and Courthouse Lanes. The building will be 100 ft. x 66ft. ground area, and will be of brick, with fireproof floors. The structure will be designed to carry an additional three storeys. Plans are being prepared for a two-storey brick building for living quarters for the Auckland Fire Brigade.

HAWKE’S BAY DISTRICT. Two of the two-storey houses being built in reinforced concrete at Napier for Mr. A. Coster are completed, and have proved a splendid success. These are probably the first two-storied residences being built wholly of concrete in Hawke’s Bay. Messrs. Rush & James, of Hastings, were the architects*. Messrs. At _ the meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council tenders for the caretakers’ house at the reservoir were received. The following were accepted, being the lowest: Masonry work, ; Thomas Rodgers, £149 16s. 9d.; carpentry and all other -work, David Sinclair, £224 6s.

SOUTHLAND.

For the erection of a teacher’s residence at South Wyndham, the Education Board have accepted the tender of Messrs. Traynor Bros for £324.
