WELLINGTON We illustrate Mr. Ross' motor boat Nina," which was built to order for him by Mr. Whiteman, of Wellington. She is 32ft. in length, and has 7ft. beam, and is equipped with an 8 h.p. Leader engine of the double cylinder horizontal opposed type, which is rather a novelty in the Dominion.' Although she has only been running a few weelcs she has proved, not only to be a thorough sea boat, but to be very fast for her length and power.

# * # AUCKLAND. Messrs. Bailey and Lowe inform us that business is exceptionally brisk with them for this time of the year. The firm launched on the 14th ult. a 30ft. x 7ft. 6in. Tuck stern launch, fitted with a 10 h.p. Holliday engine by Mr. Twigg. She is built for their own use, and is a fine boat of the Tuck stem type, m which the firm specialise. Her trial trip was very satisfactory. On the 18th they launched 'a 30ft. x 7ft. 6m. Tuck stern launch to the order of Messrs. Snowline and Cook, of the Thames. This boat is intended for the fishing trade, and is fitted with a 10 h.p. Union engine by Ryan and Co. The firm have in course of construction a 30ft. x 7ft. 6in. Tuck stern launch to the order of a local gentleman, and have laid the keels of a 35ft. and an 18ft. launch.

Orders for other launches are in hand several dinghies are being built, and a large amount of repair work is going on.

The "Ngaru" has this .season Avon three races of the Manakau Yacht Club. She is a 24ft. launch, and has a beam of 7ft. Her

engine was fitted by Messrs. Holland and (lillctte, and is a ±y« h.p. Zealandia of the latest pattern. * * * Built for the Rotorua Ferry Co the "Tutanekai" is a fine tunnel * launch of diagonal build, being 35ft. in length and having a beam of Bft. 6in. ; her depth is 3ft. 3 in., and she has a draught of 12in. She was specially designed for the tourist traffic, and is the fastest boat on Lake Rotorua, developing a speed of eight knots. Messrs. Bailey and Lowe. Auckland, are the builders, and she was fitted with a 15 hp Holliday engine by Mr. W. R. Twigg. A race took place on the 19th March for a solid silver engraved cup, value twenty guineas, presented by the Union Gas Engine Co. of San Francisco through their New Zealand agents, Messrs. Ryan and Co., of Auckland. Last year the "Nelson," of which we published a photograph in our April issue, was the successful boat out of seventeen, and Mr. J. "W. Ross again brought his boat home first this year I ,' thus winning the cup outright. The "Nelson" was built by Messrs. Collings and Bell, and fitted with a 5 h.p. Nelson engine by Messrs Wilkinson Ross and Cox. ' On the same date as above the Ponsonby Cruising Club held a cruising race which was won by the "Maroro," fitted with a lo h.p. Doman engine bv Messrs. Collins* and Bell. * ■* * * Our illustration shows one of the most comfortable and beautiful boats recently launched in Auckland harbour. Designed built, and engined bv Messrs. Collings and Bell, to the order of Mr. E. R. James, of Ponsonby, she is a fine specimen of the boatbuilder's art. The "Hazel" is 35ft. long, with a beam of 7ft. Bin. ; her draught is 2ft. 10in,. and she has sft. 6in. headroom. The cockpit is roomy and self -bailing, and is fitted with an overhead awning. The cabin, which is entered directly from the cockpit)

is ten feet long, and has two roomy berths on each side. It is well ventilated with ports and skylight, is beautifully panelled, fitted "with table, lockers, etc., and electric light. The engine room is forward of the cabin, and contains a 20 h.p. heavy-duty Doman engine, fitted with force feed lubrication, air pump and tank for whistle, apple dynamo, automatic cut-out, voltmeter and storage battery, which supplies current for lights and ignition. A galley for cooking and a sink are fitted in the engineroom, and fresh water is laid on from a 35 gallon tank situated in the stern of the boat. There are numerous cupboards for storing provisions and crockery, and also a comfortable bunk for the engineer. The engine control and steering gear are so arranged that the launch can be handled from the cockpit by one person.

['Race for the Whitney Cup. There were four entries for this race, viz., the "Sybil" (scratch), "Kir ita" (lOmin.), "Winsome" (12min.), "Omaki" (19min ) The distance was 6V 2 knots. The "Sybil" did not start, and shortly after getting away the "Winsome" broke down, leaving the race an easy win for "Kirita," which caught and passed the "Omaki" a knot and

" KIEITA " a half from the flagship. The winning boat is owned by Mr. W. 11. Worrall, and was built by Messrs. Logan Bros. She was fitted with a 20 h.p. Lozier engine by Mr. W. H. Twigg. The ''Omaki," which finished second, was built by Messrs. Collins and Bell. * * *

Mr. Le Hnquet has just sold his launch, "Jersey Lily," to Mr. Alex. White, of "Whitianga. She was fitted with a 12 h.p. Zealandia engine, which gave such satisfaction to the owner that he has placed an order with Messrs. Hoiland and Gillette for another of the same make.

* * »•• SOUTHERN. Mr. J. Hammond, of Akaroa, lias just fitted his new 36ft. x Bft. launch with a 7 h.p. Kelvin engine, supplied through the Canterbury agents, Messrs. R. P. M. Manning and Co.

Mr. Eadie, Port Pegasus, Stewart Island, has recently received a 14 h.p. Kelvin engine, making the third Kelvin installed in his trawling fleet.
