10,000 Ton Dredger, "Leviathan."

This great dredger, the largest .suction dredger in the world, was recently built for the Port of Liverpool from the designs of the port engineer, Mr. A. Lystcr, M.I.C.E. It was designed to replace the dredger "Coronation" of the same type, at the time the most powerful suction dredger afloat. This was a vessel of 3943 tons. 332 feet long, of, a beam of ,65 feet, 20.4 feet deep, and capable of dredging to ;i depth of sixty-five feet, with a pump capacity of 4500 tons an hour. The success of this vessel was so great that the engineer determined to design another on Uio same lines on a larger scale. The result is the "Leviathan," of 10.000 tons. She has three times the power and capacity of the "Coronation." dredges to a depth of 70 feet, and was built by Messrs. Caminel. Laird & Co ' The difference between this type and that -which we illustrate is that the suction is applied direct to the sand through a nozzle, whereas the other type begins the suction only after the hard material has been broken down l>\ a spiral cutler. One is for clay, the oilier for sand. The Leviathan type, moreover, is not provided with a pontoon for floating the discharge pipe
