Gasometer at Miramar.

Our illustration gives the reader a good idea of the magnitude of the new gasometer just completed at Miramar for the Wellington Gas Company. The gasometer, which is the largest in the Dominion, has been erected by the contractors, Messrs. Clayton. Son and Co , of Leeds, under the supervision of the Gas Company's engineer, Mr. H. Birch, and is a fine example of modern gas storage plant. Special attention was given to the concrete foundations, which have to carry a weight of 17,000 tons. To fill the huge steel tank 3% million gallons of water had to be pumped from a neighbouring watercourse. The gas holder is 150 ft. in diameter, and is composed of three lifts, which, when filled with gas, have a holding capacity of 1,500,000 cubic feet. The height of the structure above the foundation is 122 feet, and the cost £30,000.
