New Building for the Cuba Street Land, Building and Investment Co. Ltd.

The new building now completed in Cuba street, Wellington, for the above syndicate lias been designed as a shop, warehouse flats and photographic studio on top floor; also a basement over the whole section. The edifice, which is for the main part composed of brick with concrete bands and steel gliders, rises Gdtt. f1 om the footpath to the top of the pediment. Jt includes a basement and four stories. The design is m the J (l ieneh Renaissance style, and it Jia& been \eiy happily adapted to the general pni poses of the building. About the first noticeable featiue in legartl to the place is a no\ elty in the way of verandahs. The roof which luns across the

footway is not, as is usual, either arched or iiat, but is in the ionn of an mveited "V," the outei face of which is composed enthely of ornamental lead-lights, while the inner face is of polished marble. The eftect is that the verandah not only piotects pede&trians from ram and sun, but throws a direct and also a reflected light upon the footpath and into the shop window b. This is the only verandah of the kind that has been elected in Wellington The sei vices ot Mr. J. C. Maddison, F.8.1.8.A., architect, of Christchuich (whose local representative is Mr. T I. Yourelle) were called into requisition. He was instructed to utilise the section, which has a frontage to Cuba atieet and has been improved "out of sight," as the Americans say, by this handsome addition

to its buildings, for the facade is a very imposing one. The building woik was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Campbell Colquhoun, clerk of woiks The contract price n-as £7000. and there ha\ c been no claims made for "extras." Contractor, M.
