Tl.at the motorists of Manchester were an important factor m the defeat of Mr Winston Churchill at Manchester is not generally known m New Zealand. The fact is that the successful candidate, Mr -Joynson-Hicks is the President of the Motoi Union. lie is not only an enthusiastic motorist, but a man of diplomatic talent, for he has smoothed away the long standing- difficulties between his Union and the Royal Automobile Club, whose chairman is II S.II. Prmee Francis of Teck. Mr -Joynson-Ilicks therefore was supported by the whole motormen of his district, to the obf ideation of the much discussed ••fiscal issue." Vast numbers of votes went to him as "a valuable and reliable reinforcement of the motorists Parliamentary forces." As Mr Joynson-Hicks is described as "blithe and debonnaire," and is known to be decisive, able, enterprising, and of volcanic energy, and it is not surprising that the preference of the motorists, landed him where he is. The Manchester election then was after all not so much a Liberal defeat as a Motorist victory — perhaps"
