Heavier-than-Air.
On the other hand, the cult of the " flying machine " proper goes on unabated. In reading the various developments, the first thing that strikes one is that the aeroplane with which Mr. Santos Dumont made such a fine and suggestive display last year, the celebrated No 14, of which we gave an illustration, in full flight, in our issue of February last, has come to grief utterly, nearly killing its plucky owner, who has with characteristic frankness proclaimed that he is now seeking another type of the heavier-than-air variety. A few months ago the trials under the auspices of the Daily Mail disappointed the world sadly, for they proved conclusively, that of all the competitors, not one had made any sort of approach to the solution of the difficult problem of aerial navigation. The interest
of the world now centres in the trials promoted by another journal, the Scientific American, at the Jamestown Exhibition, now proceeding. The reasons which have impelled the management of our distinguished contemporary to this course are given in the following article, which we take from its leading columns.
