Gilby's Commercial College.

The progress of Gilby's Commercial College, Christchurch, is the subject of a neatly printed brochure recently received. This excellent institution had its origin in 1887, when evening classes for the teaching of shorthand only were held Now the College has advanced, step by step, until to-day it stands in very high esteem amongst the people of New Zealand. From merely teaching shorthand, the school soon widened its field by the inclusion of typewriting, when it became manifest that the typewriting machine had come to stay. Consequently this led to the opening up of classes for the preparation of youths and young ladies for commercial careers ; and, m natural sequence classes for General Education, Classical and Mathematical subjects, preparation for Junior and Senior Civil Services, Medical Preliminary, Solicitors' General Knowledge, and Matriculation were instituted. Then examination for Accountancy and for teachers of shorthand, and even instruction in modern languages, had to be undertaken, and all departments have proved of great value to a large number of students during the past five or six years. It is, therefore, almost needless to say that the curriculum of Gilby's Commercial College embraces almost every branch of study required for the training of ambitious men and women for success in any line of commercial, literary, or professional endeavour. The new College occupies a floor space of about 3500 sq ft., and everything to insure the convenience of the large numbers who daily study there has been thought of and carried out on an adequate scale.
