Escaped Prisoners.

The Imperial convict Fenian prisoners described below absconded from the Convict establishment at Freemantle, Western Australia, on the 17th of April, 1876, in the American whaling barque Catalpa, from New Bedford, Massachusetts, Uuited States, America, G. Anthony, master : —- Thomas Darragh, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9707 ; arrived in the colony per. convict ship Hougoumont, 10th January, 1868, sentenced for life 2nd March, 1866. Description Stout, age 42 years, height 5 feet 6 y inches, red hair, grey eyes,* round visage, fresh complexion. Marks —Mole on right cheek, mole on breast, is much freckled, square shoulders, and walks erect.

Martin Hogan, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9767 : arrived in colony per convict ship Hougoumont; received a life sentence 21st August, 1866. Description Stout, age 37 years, height 5 feet 6 inches, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, long visage, dark complexion. Marks—D left side, cut left cheek, cut left eyebrow, walks firmly, has the gait and appearance of a cavalry soldier ; is a coachpainter.

Michael Harrington, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9757 j arrived in the colony per convict ship Hougoumont ; received life sentence 7th July, 1866. Description—Middling stout, age 48 years, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, full visage, sallow complexion. Marks —D left side ; pockmarked.

Thomas Hassett, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9758 ; arrived in the colony per convict ship Hougoumont; received life sentence 15th August, 1866. Description —Middling stout, age 36 years, height 5 feet 8 inches, brown hair, light grey eyes, long visage, fresh complexion. Marks —D left side, cut mark left side upper lip ; a rough carpenter.

Robert Cranston, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9702 ; arrived in colony per convict ship Hougoumont, 1868 ;

received life sentence a 6th June, 1866. Description— Middling stout, age 36 years, height 5 feet inches, brown hair, grey eyes, oval visage, fresh complexion. Marks—Cross inside right arm ; a farmer.

James Wilson, Imperial convict, Reg. No. 9915 ; arrived in colony per convict ship Hougoumont; received life sentence 20th August. 1866. Description—Middling stout, age 40 years, height 5 feet 8 inches, brown hair, grey eyes, oval visage, fresh complexion. Marks...D left side :is a labourer.

(From Police Gazette, Ist March, 1876.) Anthony Barrett and James Stevens, expiree convicts, left Western Australia for New Zealand on the ,27th of October last in the ship Hero of the Nile. Description—Barrett is an Irishman, a labourer, 36 years of age, 5 feet B Vz inches high, middling stout, black hair, blue eyes, oval visage, fresh complexion, bracelet and crown on both wrists, one upper front tooth out. —Stevens : 46 years of age, 6 feet high, middling stout, brown hair, blue eyes, long visage, dark complexion, pockmarked; P Bon left arm. Barrett was sentenced at Dunedin on the 20th December last to 3 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting a police constable and damaging his uniform.
