Felonies and Other Offences.
1 A warrant has been issued by the Nasby Bench for the arrest of Victor Le Gall, charged with having stolen, about the 6th of April last at Eden Creek, a bay horse, value ten pounds, the property of Thomas Smithson, since recovered, having been sold by offender at Palmerston. Offender is a Frenchman, a labourer, about thirty-three years of age, five feet two or three inches high, swarthy complexion, very black hair, small black whiskers, shaved on chin, and upper lip, slightly pockmarked ; wore dirty moleskin trousers, light grey sac coat, white billy-cock hat with leather strap round it. It is supposed that he will endeavovr to leave the colony. (See Police Gazette, 1875, page 118 and ante.)
A warrant has been issued by the Justices’ Court, Dunedin, for the arrest of Robert Shannon, charged with having deserted his wife, at Timaru, in March, 1873. Offender is a North of Ireland man, a labourer, (usually works] in quarries), about forty years of age, five feet eleven and a half inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, worn full, light blue eyes, slightly lame in left leg; has been in the army and in the Crimea war. He was heard of in May last at Huranui, in the province of Nelson.
A warrant has been issued by the Port Chalmers Bench for the arrest of Peter Peterson, charged with having refused, on the 9th ultimo, at Otago heads, to provide for the support of his illegitimate child, of which Elizabeth Langton is the mother. Offender is a Dane, but can speak English fluently, a labourer, about thirty years of age, five feet nine inches high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, moustache, and goatee, smart appearance, wore dark clothes, cheese cutter cap, carried a large swag and carpet bag.
He left Purakanui on the 20th ultimo, supposed for Waikouaiti or Oamaru district, to seek employment on railway works.
A warrant has been issued by the Christchurch Bench for the arrest of John Charles Davis in default of paying thirteen pounds due for the maintenance of his wife and family. Offender is an Englishman, a station cook, formerly a private soldier in the eighteenth regiment, 29 years of age, five feet eight or nine inches high, stout build, dark complexion, black hair, blue eyes, small moustache and light beard on ■chin, shaved on cheek. In January last he was employed as cook at Benmore station, Oamaru district. His brother keeps a butcher’s shop in George-street, Dunedin.
A warrant has been issued by the Registrar of the Supreme Court, Duned : for the arrest of John Blair, an insolvent debtor, charged with being about to leave the colony for the purpose of delaying or embarrassing /the proceedings in liquidation, and taking with him ' a considerable sum of money, being part of his estate. sf about five feet seven inches high, medium build, thin Y sandy beard, whiskers, and moustache, erect gait, usually wears grey tweed suit, and black hat. He formerly kept a bakery and grocery store at Mosgiel, and Caversham. He left Dunedin by Southern train on the 27th ultimo.
A warrant has been issued by the Christchurch Bench for the arrest of William E. Taylor, charged with wife desertion. Offender is a native of New South Wales, a seaman, twenty-one years of age, five feet eight inches high, fair complexion and hair, no beard or whiskers, usually wears blue or black clothes, and elastic side boots. He was recently heard of as being employed as a seaman on board the schooner “ Thames,” and the steamer “ Stormbird.”
A warrant has been issued by the Oamaru Bench for the arrest of John Ross, charged with larceny as a bailee, at Oamaru, on the twenty-third ultimo, of a colonial-made saddle and snaffle bridle, the property of John Todd Smith, value seven pounds seven shillings. Identifiable. Offender is a Scotchman, recently employed as express driver at Oamaru, twenty years of age, five feet seven or eight inches high, stout build, very round shouldered, holds his head down, slight dark fair whiskers, no moustache, dark fair hair, large round features, thick lips, wore dark tweed suit. He borrowed a horse, saddle, and bridle from Smith, on the twenty-third ultimo, and sold the saddle and bridle on the same day, at Waimate, and then went in the direction of Timaru or Christchurch.
Stolen, on the seventh instant, from the Dunedin Brewery, Filleul street, Dunedin, an open-faced silver •Geneva watch, white dial, steel hands, No. 83,183, makers name unknown, brass albert chain, round link pattern, brass , locket and silver cress, which was cut out of a florin attached, the property of Michael McCarthy, value three pounds. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Michael Phelan, who is employed in the brewery, about 14 years of age, slender build, swarthy complexion, brown hair, very tender eyes.
Stolen, about the 26th ultimo from the shop door of John Miller, George street, Port Chalmers, twelve pairs of Scotch tweed trousers, size three, four, five, •six, and seven, light grey, dark grey, light brown, black grey patterns, value £9. Identifiable.
Stolen, about the 14th ultimo, from Bell’s Hotel, Lawrence, an open-faced English silver lever watch,
maker’s name (if any) not known, No. 1839, com* mon steel guard and two brass watch keys attached, value .Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Augustus Blewctt, late Chinese interpreter. He left Dunedin on the 26th ultimo for Blueskin and Palmerston and may sell or offer the watch for sale to Chiuese employed on the railway line.
Stolen, on the 15th ultimo, from the cabin of the ketch Trial, at Jetty street wharf, Dunedin, an old silver lever open faced watch, second hand wanting, number not known, silver curb pattern chain attached, the property of Charles Walding, value £ 4. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 24th ultimo, from the shop door of Joseph Samuel, Manse street, Dunedin, a pair of yellow grain leather leggings, fastens with four straps, and buckles, value 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 25th ultimo, from the Church of England, Port Chalmers, a very large dark brown cloth Inverness cape, nearly new, black bone buttons, the property of Charles Hudson, value 30s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Cunningham, Scotch, a seaman, nineteen years of age, five feet six inches high, stout build, fair complexion, brown hair, no hair on face. Cunningham is charged with having deserted from the ship Zulekia, at Port Chalmers, on the 25th ultimo, and for whose arrest Si reward is offered.
Stolen, between the nth January and 7th June last, from the run of John Elliott, Hokonuis, 'Southland district, about 2000 ewe sheep, including lambs and a few wethers, four, six, and eight tooth, principally and bred,—having a large strain of the Cheviot breed, by rams chiefly bred from Leicesters and Cheviots, brand on eight tooth—firebrand, small E up and down face, heart in lampblack and oil on loins, ear mark, two forebits out of left ear ; six toothfirebrand, a long sloping stroke near cheek, from above the nostril along the middle of jaw, heart on loins, ear mark, back half off left ear ; four tooth firebrand similar to six tooth, ear mark, back half and left forebit out of left ear ; a slit out of the right ear of ewe and left ear of wether lambs, heart on shoulder • and a few merinos with remarkable white faces, various ear marks. Some of the lambs were sucking, and a number of the ewes were fat. Value Sgoo. Identifiable.
Stolen, between the Ist and 3rd instant, from the shop ' door of James Elm'sley, Oamaru, a blue pilot cloth coat, raised seams, vent at bottom of back seam, left breast and two side pockets, braided all round three buttons on each sleeve, no lining, very rough inside, Hallenstein and Co.’s make, value 255. Identifiable.
Stolen, between I the 10th and 24th ultimo, from the shop door of Joseph A. Maccedo, Princes street, Dunedin, a carpet bag, about nineteen by fourteen inches, dark pattern, no lock, but staple ' for padlock, value 10s. 6d.; a ladies canvas bag, bound with leather, value 125., price marked on \ inside ; and two Portuguese palm baskets, value 4s. . 4 All identifiable.
Stolen, on the 24th ultimo, from the Oriental Hotel, Princes street, Dunedin, a black sac coat, outside left breast ana two skirt pockets, recently turned, the property of William Gaun, value 30s. Identifiable.
Stolen, between io p.m., the 25th, and 8 a.m., 26th ultimo, from a shed at the back of the premises of B. Singer & Go., George street, Dunedin, a four gallon tin of kerosene oil. branded Bindergreen's patent can, October 13th, 1868, the property of B. Singer, value 9s.
Stolen, on the 20th ultimo, from the store of Su Sing, at Arrowtown, a £5 note, seven £1 notes, about jQ 2 in silver, and three tins of opium, value j£6. Opium identifiable.
Stolen, on the 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of Mary Rudding, at Milton, a nearly new white double blanket and three single white blankets, two nearly new, one partly worn; a black circle about two or three inches in diameter in centre of one of the single blankets, value £2. Marked blanket identifiable.
Stolen, about the 21st ultimo, from Cargill street, Dunedin, a short-handle navvy shovel, No. 4 size, a piece about three quarters of an inch cut out of handle, the property of William Webster, value 6s. 6d. Iddentifiable,
.Stolen, between 5 p.m. on the 7th and 8 a.m. on the Bth instant, from the Cemetry road, North Dunedin ; a wheelbarrow, sideboards about an inch thick and newly put in, handles painted red, which is slightly worn off, iron wheel with four spokes, the property of David Kirkwood, 'value 20s. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 30th ultimo and th instant, from the premises of Robert Mimmo, Stafford-street, Dunedin, a three pint jug, white, with brown stripe of flowers round it, containing a quart of milk ; a white and green pint basin ; a blue ewer and chamber pot; and an axe, handle split from eye to end of handle, value 16s, Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 6th instant, from an unoccupied house tn Arthur-street, Dunedin, an old silver openfaced verge watch, No. 4017, no maker’s name, the property of John Walsh, value £1 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen, between the 30th ultimo and 3rd instant, from an unlocked box in the yard of the Australasian Hotel, Maclaggan-street, Dunedin, a grey tweed Mosgiel paget coat; double-breasted vest and trousers of same material, the property of James Patterson, value £5. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the shop of Christian Moser, George-street, Dunedin, a new English lever hunting watch, No. 9532, maker’s name unknown, value Identifiable.
Stolen, between 9 p.m., the 18th, and 8 a.m., the 19th ultimo, from an unoccupied house at Ravensbourne, near Dunedin, a case of champagne, a cheese between thirty and forty pounds weight, two bottles of whiskey, one of Dunville’s and one of Mitchell’s, brand, the property of Daniel White, value £5 9s. Identification doubtful.
Stolen, on the 16th ultimo, from the premises of John Trotter, Melville street, Dunedin, a three quart saucepan, no handle to lid, had been some time in use, a large sized old and worn tin dish, holes in bottom which are stopped with tape, value Bs. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 19th ultimo, from the cabin of the lighter Nightingale at Stuart street wharf, Dunedin, a pair of grey double blankets, half worn, hemmed with red worsted, a black stripe three inches broad at top and bottom, the property of George Port, value 12s. Identification doubtful.
Stolen, on the 17th ultimo, from Cumberland street, near the Hospital, Dunedin, a dark tweed Paget coat, about half worn, lined with black serge, check pattern, two outside pockets with flaps and one inside breast pocket, the property of William Broke, value 30s. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 10th ultimo, from the person of George Sim, in the Provincial Sale Yards, Dunedin, a brown morocco corded leather pocket book, five by three inches, with elastic band, containing a deposit receipt on the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, for ;£ioo, and a receipt for £24. from the Post Office Savings Bank, Wellington, both in favour of George Sim. Identifiable.
Stolen, between 5 p.m. on the 22nd and 8 a.m. on the 23rd ultimo, from the goldmining claim of William Smith and James Turnbull, at Sandy Creek, Orepuki, about 30 ounces of gold, value £ll4 15s. Suspicion attached to Thomas Escott and James Fort on, who, about three weeks previous, worked for wages in claim. Escott is an Englishman, a labourer, about forty years of age, five feet eight inches high, stout build, pale complexion, fair hair, whiskers, and moustache. Forton is an Englishman, a labourer, thirty years of age, five feet five inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, small dark whiskers and moustache. They both reside at Orepuki at present.
Sopposed stolen, on the 21st ultimo, at Invercargill, a curly haired black and tan retriever dog, between three and five years old, the property of John S. Manning, value Identifiable.
Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the shop of John Brew, at Blueskin 255. in silver.
Between 8 p.m. on the 30th ultimo and 7 a.m. on the Ist instant, in a bedroom in the Commercial Hotel, Milton, four £5 notes were stolen from the pocket-book of James Grant, and four £1 notes substituted. Gilbert Deimage suspected. Irish, thirtyfive years of age, five fact-ten inches high, medium build, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache. Shaved on chin, smart military appearance.
Stolen, about the 3rd instant, from the clothes-line of W. N. Forsyth, Maitland-street, Dunedin, a lady’s white linen night dress, two calico chemises, three calico pinafores, three linen pocket handkerchiefs, and a number of linen cuffs, value jQ2. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 20th ultimo, from an office in Eldon Chambers, Princes-street, Dunedin, a maple walkingstick, handle resembling that of a riding-whip, a large black spot on neck of handle, where putty is inserted ; had been broken near ferrule and mended with two pieces of wire, which are visible, varnished dark brown color, the property of Charles Kemp, value 12s. 6d. Identifiable.
Stolen, about the 29th ultimo, from the clothes-line of Barbara Thoms, Maitland street, Dunedin, two white cotton bed quilts, small size; two cotton plaid pattern skirts, black, white, and grey stripes ; two childrens’ wincey dresses, grey pattern, trimmed with black braid ; four childrens’ holland pinafores, a lady’s cotton chemise and cotton drawers, a moleskin trousers, well worn, patch on right knee, a pair of men’s cotton drawers, and a linen sheet, value Identifiable.
Stolen, about the 30th ultimo, from the meat safe of the Rev. W. T. Oldham, Roslyn, ten or twelve pounds of roast beef, value 6s.
Stolen, about the 28th ultimo, from the clothes-line of Mary Lennon, Maitland-street, Dunedin, a lady’s cotton drawers, marked “ M. Lennona grey, white, and black striped woollen plaid trousers : a black and white striped cotton plaid shirt; a brown and white striped cotton shirt; a black and white striped woollen shirt; a diaper table-cloth, marked “M. Lennon ;” a lady’s cotton night gown, trimmed with crochet; a diaper towel, marked “ M. Lennon,” and a blue calico jacket and trousers, the property of Mary Lennon, value 30s. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 28th ultimo, from a bedroom in the European Hotel, George-street, Dunedin, a £5 note, the property of Mrs. Caulahan. Suspicion attached to Nathan Green, English, a bookmaker and cardsharper, thirty.two years of age, five feet three inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, clean shaved, ■except black moustache.
Stolen, between the i2th and isth ultimo, from Balclutha, a bay mare, about fourteen hands high, black points, low in wither, small star on forehead, spur brand on near shoulder, the property of Alexander McNeil, value Identifiable.
Stolen, on the lith ultimo, in the Alliance, Hotel, Oamaru, from the person of Cornelius Mannx, a five jQ S note and notes, supposed on the National Bank of New Zealand, and some silver.
Stolen, about the 28th ultimo from the clothes line of Mrs. Lackstone, Cannongate street, Dunedin, a new white counterpane and a new brown calico sheet, value 20s. Sheet identifiable.
Lost or stolen, about the Bth ultimo, from the persou of John Foley, while drunk at Oamaru, four notes and a meerschaum pipe with silver ferrule, having a small dinge in it near mouthpiece. Pipe Identifiable.
About the 9th ultimo, at Waitahuna gully, a goldwashing cradle and a sluice-box, about eight feet , long, were maliciously broken and the hopper of the ■ cradle stolen, the property of Michael Curran, value £2. Hopper identifiable. Suspicion attached to Thomas M‘Crine, thirty-four years of age, five feet four inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, fair hair, at present residing at Waitahuna.
Stolen, about the 18th April last from a box in a bedroom in the Crown Hotel, Rattray street, Dunedin, a gold wedding ring, a keeper, very broad and well chased, the name “ Gaunt” stamped on inside of each, a very fine gold necklet, clasp broken, the property of Mary Ann O’Keeffe, value £G. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the nth ultimo, from the dwelling of the Rev. Thomas Keogh, Cromwell, six notes tied in a roll with black cotton thread, about eighteen £1 notes, twelve sovereigns and a few shillings in silver, consisting of sixpences and fourpences. Suspicion attached to Sarah Williams, Irish, forty-two years of age, five feet high, thin features, dark complexion, hair and eyes.
Supposed stolen, on the 30th ultimo, from a child in George street, Dunedin, a double gold ring snake pattern —two snakes heads reversed —with a diamond and ruby, and a diamond and emerald set in eyes, the words “ Presented to Charles h lexman Esquire, by his employees” engraved on the inside, value twenty pounds. Identifiable.
Stolen, on the 7th instant, at Waimate, a swag'consisting of a red blanket, a white blanket, a large piece torn off corner, both nearly new, a pair of grey tweed trousers, not much worn, a pair of old moleskin trousers, a shepherd’s plaid shirt, a blue and white striped Crimean shirt, blue stripe larger than white stripe, a pair of watertight boots and two pairs of white worsted socks, the property of Chaales Wright, value £4. 1 os. Identifiable. A man of the following description who had no swag, was seen taking the swag away, and then went in the direction of Oamaru : —Description : twenty-seven to thirty years of age, five feet eight inches high, black hair and whiskers worn short, wore ribbed tweed trousers, old black fine cloth paget coat; and soft dark felt wideawake hat. t
