Rewards. To Constable John MTvor, (377), the sum of £2 has been awarded from the Police Reward Fund, for the zeal and tact displayed by him in effecting the arrest of John Biddle alias Hobartown Jack , charged with sheep stealing.

To Constable Thomas Meredith Smith, (422), the sum of £3 has been awarded from the Police Reward Fund, for the airest and prosecuting to conviction Thomas Langham , and Thomas Robson, for higway robbery under arms.

INCURRING EXPENDITURE TO END OF FINANCIAL YEAR. Offices of the Police Department, Dunedin, 4th January, 1864. Officers in charge of Districts and Escorts are reminded that the present “Financial” year terminates on the 31st March next, and that it behoves them to use the utmost caution in incurring (consistently with the efficiency of the Department) any expenditure that may exceed the sums voted by the Provincial Council “for the contingent expenses” of the force.

Care must also be taken that there be no outstanding accounts whatsoever, after the 31st March, as none will be recognized after that date, unless it can be most satisfactorily proved that the delay in submitting them for payment was unavoidable.
