EXTRACTS FROM VICTORIAN POLICE GAZETTE
Eveylyn Lockley is charged upon warrant with embezzling from the National Bank of Aus - tralasia at Carngham, Victoria, a sum of £63. He is supposed to have appropriated altogether £747 Os. 7d., and is believed to be now in New Zealand. He is described as 31 years of age, sft. lOin. high, slight build, light complexion, fair hair, small moustache and beard, delicate respectable appearance, an Englishman. A photograph of this offender is filed in the Commissioner’s office.
James B. Pritchard is charged, on warrant issued at Melbourne, with embezzling large sums of money from his employers, Robert Towns & Co. of that place. Offender was chief clerk to the firm, and is described as 28 or 30 years of age, fresh complexion, caieworn look, cheeks slightly sunken, rather hi<di cheek bones, full black whiskers worn under the chin, small imperial, no moustache, medium build, black straight hair, light grey eyes, an Englishman, generally dresses in black. Highway Robbery and Stealing from 'ihe Person. W G q ™ Herbert guinness was assaulted about 9.30 p.m. on the 26th March, in the
Carlton Gardens, by two men, and robbed of the following property : —A silver open-faced geneva watch, No. 3120, and about £3O in' a dark brown portemonnaie. BB The first offender was about 30 years of age 5 feet three or four inches high, stout build, and clean shaved; wore fustian coat and trousers, and cap without peak; general appearance that of a bricklayer. The second man cannot be described.lst April, 1863. It has since been ascertained that one of the above offenders is the celebrated Jonhny Campbell who was leader of the gang of bushrangers between Little Bendigo and Korong, in 1853. He is described as 46 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion and grey eyes, dark hair (curly) mixed with grey, JC AC. upper left arm, marks of flagellation on back. Supposed to be in this province.
Stolen sometime prior to the 12th of June last, from the person of Mr. John Robert James, Bay View Hotel, Sandridge, while asleep on board the Alhambra steam-ship, when on passage from Port Chalmers to Sandridge, 7 £lO notes of New Zealand Bank, Nos. 1326, 5, 1792, 2589, 1400, 2518, and 2704, identifiable.
A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of David, M’Denniel, charged with deserting his wife at Richmond, Victoria, in June, 1862, and is now reported to be in New Zealand. He is a Yorkshireman, aged 30 years/about 6ft. high, stout built, dark complexion, hair, eyes, and moustache, with small beard under chin.
A warrant has been issued by the Sandhurst Bench and is now in the office of the Commissioner of Police, Dunedin, for the apprehension of the person named and described below', charged with deserting his wife, and leaving her without means of support:— Michael Flannery, 34 years old, sft. 7in. high, stout built, pale complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair, no moustache, sandy whiskers w'orn all round the chin, long features, high cheek bones, appearance that of a labourei. Supposed to be employed as a carrier between Dunedin and the Dunstan Diggings.
Extract from Victorian Police Gazette 7th ' June 1863, page 176. Warrant issued by the Castlemaine Bench, for the apprehension of John Shelley for absconding from his bail from Victoria on a charge of horse-stealing, and supposed to be in Dunedin Description— an Irishman about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high, round features, red or sandy hair and whiskers, speaks with a strong Irish accent. V. H. Bradley of Castlemaine offers £lO for his apprehension.

John Porter is charged on warrant with conspiring to defraud John Langlands assignee for George Whitcomb, and others at Melbourne about July, 1862. The offender is an Englishman, lately manager of the Provincial Institute, Melbourne, aged 53 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, grey hair, grey bushy
whfskera worn all round the face, medium build, and sallow complexion. He is supposed to be attempting to get to Callao via Dunedin.
