ROBBERY OF THE LACHLAN ESCORT UNDER

ARMS, 15TH JUNE, 1862. . Charlie, brother to Johnny Gilbert, , has been arrested by the Dunstan Detective Police, and now stands remanded pending the receipt of the warrant from Sydney.

Between the hours of 10 and 11 p.m., 3rd February, 863, Messrs. Alfred Jones and Alfred Meirs : were standing under the Verandah at Hawkesbury House, Waikouaiti, when a shot was fired by some person unknown, which passed through Mr. Meirs’ hat.

Stolen on 11th February instant, from on board the steamer Gothenburg , at Port Chalmers, a tyel’ow colored leather portmanteau, all the straps gone with the exception of those that cover the handles. It containedl pair of shepherd’s plaid trousers, 1 do. pepper and salt do., 1 do. black cloth do., 4 pairs of white do., 8 regatta shirts and 10 white shirts, a silver-plated coffee pot, a sugar bowl and a milk jug, plain patterns. Suspicion rests on two men and a woman who landed at Port Chalmers from the Gothenburg. Description —lst, a tall stout man ; 2nd, tall and thin with grey whiskers. The female was low sized, stout build, fair hair and complexion, wore shepherd’s plaid shawl, and black hat trimmed' with brown flowered ribbons; they had the appearance of “ old hands.” No warrant.

; Stolen during the night of 11th February, 1863, from the clothing of Patrick Whyte, whilst stopping in the-Junction Hotel, Tuapeka, an old leather purse with rusty iron clasp, containing four £5 notes of the Bank of New Zealand, numbers unknown. The names of■ the Manager and Accountant appear on the back of one of the'notes. They are all stained from Whyte having carried them for a long time on his person also, three sovereigns and some silver. A warrant has been issued by the Tuapeka Bench for the arrest of one Wainwright for committing this offence. Description— 30 years, sft. 8 or Dili, high, medium build, ■ fresh complexion, sandy hair, whiskers," and moustache; wore blue serge shirt, moleskin trousers, and grey tweed cap ; supposed to have gone to the Dunstan.

Stolen from the Cafe De Paris, Dunedin, on February 7th, 1863, a gold hunting cylinder watch, maker Riders, No. 27762, a small gold cross, a silver heart, a quarter dollar, and a three-halfpenny silver piece ; the property of Miss -Mary llalniri^BSfaßMMßlMftflßlMß

Stolen from 27 Marks-street, Melbourne, Victoria, on 24th January, 1863, 1551 yards of silk of various colours, widths, and lengths. The principle colours are sky glace, drab glace,- black, white, and coloured; also three black robes with coloured striped flounces, together with 15 Sovereigns. The above is

valued at £IOOO, and is the property of Messrs. Adams and Clark, as above. 8 Feb. 1863.

Stolen from the tent of Edward Wilson, sawyer, Moeraki, on the 2nd instant, during the absence of the owner, a horizontal double cased silver Geneva watch, No. 2678, both short hand and main-spring broken ; identifiable.
