WANGANUI NOTES

(From our own correspondent.) November 12. A pretty ceremony was witnessed at the 7.30 Mass on Sunday, the 2nd inst., when 35 children from St. Mary's Convent, made their First Holy Communion. The usual First Communion breakfast was held in St. Joseph's Hall, Rev. Father G. Mahony presiding. At the evening devotions the act of consecration to St. Joseph was read by Master F. Price, while the one to Our Lady was read by Muriel Price. Prior to her marriage, Miss Belle McLean, a popular member of St. Mary's congregation, was the recipient of many presents. On Sunday, November 2, St. Mary's Choir, of which she was a valued member, presented her with a handsome silver entree dish. The D.1.C., in which firm Miss McLean was employed for a number of years, presented her with a beautiful eiderdown, while the staff gave lier a set of table silver. Miss McLean was married to Mr. Hilton Bellringer at St. Mary's Church, on Thursday, November 6. Rev. Father McDonald, parish priest of Hastings, paid a flying visit to Wanganui last week. The annual convent entertainment will be held in the Opera House on Wednesday, December 10. Aram oho Convent (School was transformed into Fairyland on Monday, October 27, when the pupils staged their annual entertainment. Congratulations to the Sisters who trained them, for it was through their splendid efforts that the concert proved such an unqualified success. Every item was worthy of high praise, but two of the youthful performers must be given special mention. These are little Ngaire Te Wiri, a tiny maid of five who recited "Dolly's got the Measles," and Bernard Locke, whose singing of "My Wife's Relations" earned for him a vociferous encore. The other items which composed the first part of the programme Were: Song by the senior girls, "Teacup Times"; recitation ("Dolly Show"), Infants; vocal duet ("I.Don't Want to play in your Yard"), Non Locke and Jean Henderson; action song ("Butterflies") by the infants. This item was a particularly good one, the color scheme being very effective. Recitation ("How Father. Made the Jam"), Florrie McGinniskin; action song by the boys ("Tall Top Hat"); vocal solo ("The Fairy Artist"), Mavis Clarke; recitation ("Baking Day"), Mollie Henderson; action song ("Milkmaids") by the junior girls; also recitations by Margaret and Clifford Benefield, and a balloon dance by Jean Hoskings. The second half of the programme was taken up by a sparkling operetta, "Little Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The stately queen was Ida. Benefield, while the title role was ably played by Mavis Clarke. The other principal characters were Prince of Arcadee, Noel George; Podgio, Ean , Callaghan; Baron, . Eric George; Niobe, Grace Henderson; Fairy Queen, Doreen Gregory. Great credit is also due to those responsible for the lighting and scenic effects, which lent such, an artistic touch to the performance. , .
