Complimentary Social to Dean Lane
(From our Gisborne correspondent.) A complimentary social was tendered Very Rev. Father Lane on Tuesday night, the sth inst., at Liberty Hall. The hall was crowded to its full capacity by the many friends— and non-Catholic—of the Very Rev. Dean, all vieing to do honor to our popular parish priest on the occasion of his elevation to the dignity of Dean of Ohinemuri. Mr. H. Alley presided, and amongst those present were Rev. Father Brady (parish priest of Ormond), Rev. Father Downey. (Gisborne), the Mayor (Mr. G. Wildish) Councillors H. H. De Costa, F. Colin, F. Gray H. Hill' and I. Mil-field. Mr. T. Haisman, on behalf of the parishioners, presented a congratulatory address and a handsome fish service, and voiced the felicitations of the many friends of the Very Rev. Dean on 'honor conferred on him by the Bishop of Auckland. The Mayor also spoke eulogisticallv of Dean Lane's many good qualities as a very prominent citizen, and charitable gentleman in needy cases, irrespective of creed. The Chairman introduced Rev. Father Downey
to the gathering, this being his first public appearance; although he had been strenuously at work in the parish during the absence of Dean Lane in Auckland. Dean Lane, on rising to reply to the address and presentation, was greeted with prolonged applause. He thanked his beloved parishioners, the Mayor, Councillors, and citizens of Gisborne for their kind felicitations he voiced the need for unity amongst his flock in the great undertaking just commenced of erecting new schools, convent, presbytery, and church, and concluded by thanking one and all for their kind expressions of good-will. A fine musical programme arranged by Miss M. Neill was enjoyed by the large assembly. Fencing, and a delectable supper added to the pleasure of the function. " .
