MRS. SARAH JANE REILLY, TAKAKA> * ' • The death occurred at her residence, Commercial Street, Takaka, recently, after a short illness, of an old and respected resident of this district in the person of Mrs. Sarah Jane Reilly, relict of . the late Mr. James Reilly (says the Golden Bay Times). Deceased, who was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. C. P. Kearns, was born in Ranzau, Waimea District, in 1845. She married Mr. Jas. Reilly in Nelson, and came to Takaka about 60 years ago and kept the Shamrock Hotel at Waitapu, later building the Telegraph Hotel in the township, which she conducted until about 20 years ago, when she retired from active business. Her husband predeceased her by some 30 years. In the early days the late Mrs. Reilly was a great friend of the Maoris-, who liked and trusted her. She was noted as a great business woman and was most successful in such matters, and was always to the fore in cases of need or .public benefit. She leaves a family of five sons and three daughters, who are: Messrs. James, Charles, Fredrick, Alphonso, arid Lawrence, all resident in Takaka, Mesdames A. Emms (Takaka), G. Neal (Wellington), and R. Duncan (Tasmania), who will have the sympathy of the whole community in their bereavement. She is also survived' by. a brother. (Mr. A. T, Kearns, Auckland), and a sister :f (Mrs. T. Langdon, Temuka). The funeral, which left the Church of the Sacred Heart for the West Takaka Cemetery was largely attended. Rev. Father Campbell officiated at the graveside, .while six grandsons of the deceased acted as pall-bearers.— ;' . ? .-■-.; . •
