The Little People's Page

Conducted by Anne

Dear Little People, I know you will be pleased when you read Dr. Liston's ' letter to you all. Had you really thought, I wonder, what it means to help build an orphanage, did you ever dream how easy it can be to have a share in a great work? Read carefully what the good Bishop writes and let us see if we can't do something really worth while. So far we have collected ——(you will see how much at the end of my letter) ■ —hardly enough to buy a suit and a pair of boots for a good-sized boy. Certainly there wouldn't be enough left over to get him a decent jersey for "footey," and what about his breakfast, dinner, and tea —Anne. Orphanage Fund. —Already acknowledged, £5 17s 6d; Molly McGrath, Is; Helen Cameron, os ; Margaret Cameron, 2s; Tommy and Lance McLean, os; Pat and Tom Mulqueen, 2s; Doreen Haddock, 10s; Pearl McNeill, ss; Edward J. Prendeville, 2s Gd; Francis Brady, 3s 6d; total, £7 13s Gd. St. Benedict's, Newton, Auckland, August 16, 1923. Dear Anne, I am very grateful to you for your kind interest in our Orphanage Fund and for your timely support. Will you be good enough, to see that the enclosure readies the children who subscribed ? With kind greetings. Yours sincerely, * JAMES M. LISTON, Coadjutor-Bishop of Auckland. [Enclosure.] The orphan boys in their hundreds who will live in the new home now being put up for them at Takapuna, Auckland, send their best thanks, through their Bishop, Dr. Liston, to all the kind-hearted children of Aunt Anne's column who dipped into their money-boxes and found there something to provide a bed in the new orphanage. They pray that God will bless these kind brothers and sisters of theirs. Dear Anne,This is my first letter to you and I am sure you will be pleased to have a friend away up in Loburn. I think 1 am the first one to write from these parts aren't I? We get the Tablet every week and I. like reading the "Little People's Page" and also the smile-raisers. I have just turned thirteen and I am in std. 6. I go to the Loburn Public School as we live about 9 miles from the nearest town which is Rangiora. I am the only one in the family. I have passed two music exams, one with 81 marks out of a 100, and the other with 90, and I am going in for another about the end of September. I have many pets which include two doves, a black Persian cat, a pup, and many others. The Influenza is very prevalent in Christchurch and Rangiora and a few cases in Loburn. Our school closed to-day for a week as there were only nine children present out of about forty. Wern't the floods awful? The water only dried up out of our yard about, three weeks ago. Well Anne I must close now, wishing you every success with your "Little People's Page." Your new friend, Ellie Brady, Loburn, via Rangiora. (Welcome Elsie, glad you want to be one of us. How are all the pets. —Anne.) ,-,'•,, Dear Anne,—This is my first letter to you and I would like very much to become one of your little friends. I am eight years old and in standard one. I go to Gore for music and catechism —twenty miles from our place. I have one sister and three brothers. The youngest one is at the C. 8.5., Dunedin, and the other two at work. We had a lit% pony called Barney, but he broke his leg and we had to shoot him. Twill close now. From your new friend, Ima Stanton, Riversdale. P.S. —I enclose 2s for Orphans. (Poor Barney. What hard luck. Glad to hear from you and thank you Ima for your donation. Anne.) Dear Anne,—lt is a long time since I last wrote to you, but I have been reading the little people page every week and do enjoy them. How is the 'Flu in Dunedin? We all

had it down here. Dear Anne I am sending you 5s (postal note) for the Orphanage Fund. I hope my name /is not the last on the list. I think the answer to your sum of sheep is 5. We have a parrot and one day it got away and flew away seven miles; it was caught feeding with some fowls, we have it home again. It is raining here all day, but we get no floods like Dunedin. I think I will stop this time. So, good-bye Anne, with best wishes to you and all the little people. Your little chum, Bella Walsh, Te Tua. (Thank you Bella for your donation. Are you quite rid of the 'Flu? See if you know any of the Little People in our Picture Gallery!—Anne.) Dear Anne, —This is my first letter to you. I am ten years old and in Std. 3. The exam, was on the tenth of July. I have six brothers and two sisters. I think I'll close, so good-bye dear Anne. Your' new friend, Maud Dodunski, Inglewood. , (Did you think I had forgotten you Maud? Guess Mount Egniont is looking beautiful now. —Anne.) Dear Anne,—May' I become a member of your little people's page which is in the Tablet? lam 7 years old and in standard I. Would very much like to see my letter in the page as we get the Tablet every week and I like reading the little boys and girls letters.—So, good-bye Anne.' I will write again soon, your new friend, Alice Maud Fleming, Riversdale. (Welcome Alice, glad you like us. Yours is quite a good letter for a little seven-year-old. Did you write it all by yourself? As I have not much more news I will close. Good-bye, with love from Irene McAnulty, Rakaia. (No Irene, I was not washed away in the flood and I'm very glad to hear from you. Do you like snowballing? Anne.) Dear Anne, —I was very pleased to see my letter in the Tablet. You must be kept awfully busy answering all our letters in the Tablet every week, but I know you cannot answer them all at once. My little brother got quite excited when he saw my first letter in the Tablet so he thought he would like to write one himself. I have two sisters and all three of us were born in March, my two youngest sisters were born on the twenty-eighth and myself on the seventh. I am ten years old and in Std. 4 and learning music, I am getting on lovely and hope to be able to play for concerts. Dear Anne if you ever come to Fortrose we would be very pleased to have a visit from you but let it be in the summer as it would be more pleasant for you. I will close now, dear Anne, good-night and God bless you. Your loving friend, Molly Murphy, Fortrose. (I believe it would be very nice to spend a holiday with you Molly. What are your sisters' names? I have their birthdays.—Anne.) Dear Anne, —I was very glad to see my letter in the Tablet..,, I have just returned from a week's holidav in Christchurch. I have lost my little kitten. In my" last letter I forgot to tell you when my birthday was: it is on the 26th of December. Have you ever been to Little River, it is a very pretty place.
