FOOTBALL NOTES. Christchurch. —In the Rugby competitions on Saturday, week (writes our own correspondent) the Marists were successful in all grades. Following were the results : Seniors (48) v. North Canterbury (3); 2nd grade (9) v. Prebbleton (3); 3rd grade (29) v. Merivale (0); 4th grade (17) v. Linwood (4); sth grade a bye; 6th grade (36) v. Linwood (0). In the schools Soccer Marists have played Richmond and St. Michael's, winning each game by 2 goals to nil. Invercargill.— As the Marist Old Boys' Football Club had a bye in the town competition the Rugby Union sent them out to Calcium on Saturday, May 26, to play a representative team from the Central Sub-Union. The Marist team won by 12 points to 8. Mr. J. W. Stead, the famous "All-Black."' and one of the Southland selectors, who witnessed the match, complimented the "Greens" on their endeavor to play the back game. On the same day the seconds won from Bluff by 11 to 0 The 3rds were beaten by Invcrcargill by 6 to 3. The oths had a runaway win against Southern, scoring 51 to 5.
Ashburton. —The Celtics journeyed to Springburn on Saturday, 25th nit., and played the combined team May-field-Springburn in tho first round of the senior competition, winning a hard-fought but cleanly contested game by 6 points to 3. Juniors lost to Allenton by 21 points to 3. 3rd grade a bye.
The results of Saturday's match in the first round of the senior competition resulted in the local Celtic senior fifteen defeating the leading team in the competition— Ashburton—by 15 points to 6. With one match still to be decided, Celtic and Methven lead in the competition half a point ahead of Ashburton. Celtic 3rd grade suffered defeat at the hands of Ashburton by 26 points to 0. CELTIC CRICKET CLUB, TIM ARIL (From our own correspondent.) The Celtic Cricket Club held its annual social at St. Patrick's Hall on May 23. when there was a large attendance. During the evening Mr. B. Macdonald (president of the South Canterbury Cricket Association) presented the handsome Bristol Cup to the captain (Mr. M. Houlihan) on behalf of the senior eleven, which won every match in the competition last season. The executive of the club under the able direction of Mr. Roach (president) and Mr. R. Marlow (secretary) did everything possible for the enjoyment of the gathering, which was voted a great success in every respect. ASHBURTON CATHOLIC CLUB. (From our own correspondent.) The first of a series of "at home'' socials, under the auspices of the Ashburton Catholic Club was held in the club room last Wednesday evening week, when there was a large attendance of members and friends. In progressive euchre the prize winners were Miss A. Lennon and Mr. W. Bryant, the consolation prizes going to Miss M. O'Malley and Rev. Father O'Doherty. The company was treated to an attractive musical and elecutionary programme contributed to by Misses Quigley, O'Malley, and Meeking, and Messrs/ Cullen, Hutchison, and Kennedy. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies. Taken right through the evening was a great success and everything possible was done to make for the enjoyment of the guests, who were at all times comfortably "at home.''
